Citizenship for sale?

A Tucson hospital's health-care package promises affluent Mexican women the chance to have their babies in posh surroundings with access to the latest medical equipment.

But the marketing materials leave out a key draw in the arrangement: U.S. citizenship for the newborn.

Tucson Medical Center's "birth package" gives an official nod to a generations-old practice of wealthy Mexican women coming to U.S. hospitals to give birth. Mexican families do the same thing at all local hospitals, but TMC is the only one actively recruiting their business.

The practice is legal, but offensive to some advocates of tougher U.S. immigration standards.

“t’s not just Mexico. It’s the world. And its been going on a long time.”

You are right. My mother flew from Brazil to PR for my birth, because she wanted me to be a citizen. She was not wealthy, but saved her money so that I would have a chance for better opportunities. I was born in 1960. It was all perfectly legal.

“I didn’t know the Spaniard derived Mexican upper class did this.”

Why not, their kids born in Mexico are all schooled here, most go to Harvard or Yale.

The spanish in Mexico don't really care about US citizenship since they have everything they want in Mexico, can come here legally, open businesses here, etc., all with legal papers, Comp USA, Bimbo Bread for example.

anchor babies were outlawed in 1996.

(hence the dream act to bring back anchor babies)

This is about birthright citizenship.

In this case the baby goes home with mommy. Custody follows the child ala the 1996 law. Immigration lawyers are trying to change that.

Also keep in mind, in order for a child born OUTSIDE the USA to claim birthright citizenship, the US Citizen parent has to have lived INSIDE the USA for 10 years.
