THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release June 20, 2009
Statement from the President on Iran
The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.
As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.
Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
“The arc of the moral universe” is a brilliant quote, but not terribly helpful here. It means good will suffer for a long time, but will eventually prevail.
“That statement, As I said in Cairo communicates to you Obamas mentality. What does Cairo have to do with Tehran?”
I guess to Obama all Muslims look the same...(eye roll)
He didn’t even say it himself. It was a stinking press release. Mike Immanuel stood outside the white tent and read it on Fox taking care to read every word, (which he stressed,) as written.
I can’t stand it.
1) This would’ve been OK (sort of) had he immediately released this statement. As it is, it’s weak, and he’s about a week late. That makes it totally useless and pointless.
2) Again, he tries to interject himself as some kind of final authority on How The World Should Work. Narcissism at its finest, yet again.
3) As someone else pointed out (and I think it’s worth repeating), mullahs and Persians don’t give a flying you-know-what about MLK. I’d be surprised if any of them know who he is. This seems to be written for an AMERICAN audience, as a sort of, “See? See? I care! I really kinda sorta do!”
4) This is such an amazing display of weakness. If we can see it, you can bet your @$$ that every tinpot dictator on Earth sees it, too. And that’s REALLY bad.
I appreciate the replies and I’d love to discuss this with you. Problem is, I have to go out. (Hmmm, not really a problem, but you know what I mean... ;-))
A’ll be baak!
Why should a POTUS need to invoke that ephemeral fraud of liberal foreign policy, the “international community,” unless he's afraid of making a statement that could be interpreted as unequivocal?
He needn't worry. The foolish false pretenses have been preserved and the cowardly fence-stradling continues for all to see.
He's voting "present" until he sees how events turn out. Anything good resulting from the brave dissidents Obama will say came as a result of his Cairo speech. He is unbelievable!
Response from “ConNews” on Twitter:
“Obama has transcended color because when he speaks he comes across as yellow and I see red.”
LOL!
Our president has had too much on his plate...bla, bla, bla..."
“He didnt even say it himself.”
The Mullahs can interpret that as hands-off from America.
I elsewhere posted comments from them showing confusion about Obama’s mixed messages and “respect.”
This seals it for the mullahs.....
He needs to show Iran that he can govern without coercion and quit ramming new spending down our throats in constant crisis mode.
"As I said in Cairo..."
obama will NEVER address or utter “vote fraud” or anything akin to it......
The One has spoken.
It's all so clear now.
What on earth is he talking about??
Better late then never? Obama shows once again that he is an empty suit.
Instead of quoting MLK, he should have quoted Reagan.
