THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release June 20, 2009
Statement from the President on Iran
The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.
As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.
Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
Thanks. I should warn you that I did make some comments you might not agree with here though.
Check this out.

Sorry, I didn’t realize I had written post 50 to you directly. Oh well...
I don’t believe he has been engaged enough either. I would also concur that he needs to show less respect for Iran’s leaders, and a lot more for the people who seem to think almost universally, that they were royally screwed during and after the election. I appreciate the response.
I agree with those comments. His stance on Iran during this crisis didn’t convince me of his moral standing or abilities as a leader though. This is just more of the same. I’m sure it didn’t for you either. He’s been a fooseball on Iran since last year. This is just more of the same. This guy is dumber than a box of rocks.
Thank you Don-O. I appreciate your response.
I agree Shermy. He is a prima donna. He’s also out of his element. This guy is not Presidential material. He’s low level corporate gofer material.
This is embarrassing, as well as very dangerous.
Biden was wrong. He made it clear a nation would test us within Obama’s first six months. Hell, a number of nations are. Obama is being tested, and he’s coming up wanting...
We’re not the only ones laughing at this buffoon.
Giving Obama service to the bitter end. I’m surprised an undercover cop hasn’t busted at least one of them by now. ;-)
I don’t have a problem with that.
Thank you Republic. I appreciate your additional comments. Yes, both the Iranian people and the U.S. people got stuck didn’t they. We had a lot of corruption in our precess this last time too didn’t we. Frankly, we should be doing some protesting of our own concerning ACORN and other agencies.
As long as it is a statement of support for and solidarity with the Iranian people that can’t be construed as a possible promise of intervention, I would agree with you.
I appreciate the mention.
Nice point. I suspect those students (and faculty) at Columbia are oblivious to the fact they were coddling a tyrant. Such is the state of things on our university campuses these days.
Have you seen any of those nut-jobs protesting the Iran government’s actions?
Crickets...
BTW, I’m going to twitter that thought in a few minutes. Columbia U that is...
LOL, good one there Wolf24.
Should have pinged you to that comment above.
I’m somewhat sympathetic to your views here, but Reagan didn’t put arms on the ground in Afghanistan within a few days did he? In that instance there was an armed invasion too. In Iran it’s a domestic situation.
I would also be very careful about doing something that would precipitate a new embassy hostage crisis.
In Iran you have an organized military and secret police. I believe it would be fairly difficult for us to send in CIA advisers. In Afghanistan there was a war setting, with outlying regions receptive to help, and capable of receiving that help.
I’m not convinced Iran lends itself to the exact same type of intervention on our part.
That would be an act of war IMO. If we’re intent on going to war with Iran, then so be it, but I’d make sure that was what I wanted to do up front.
Obama: blah, blah, blah. Yak, yak, yak.
obama is an idiot.
I am 100% for the Iranians overtaking their current loony government. It is horrible what is happening, and so is this picture. This isn’t about how much we care, it’s what should be done about it. Giving concrete answers is what I’m asking for.
A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.
And here in lies the true psychosis of the false messiah. You don’t lead by formulating your policies with the results of focus groups. A true leader has the foresight and intestinal fortitude to lead, and every one else follows.
