Statement from the President on Iran

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release June 20, 2009

Statement from the President on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

The political conditions were finally right for him to make such a statement. He sat on the fence to see how it went. If these protests hadn’t taken off he would have kept cozying up to Imanutjob.

I didn’t say it was strong, I said his strongest statement yet......I have believed for a week that we are watching a democratic revolution and I think it is beyond ironic that the US Democrats (the party of Jefferson for god’s sake) is standing on the sidelines. History will have to note O as the 1st Black president. History will not be kind.

As the death toll rises, I wonder how many in Iran will look to Iraq and think how lucky they were, to have the U.S. come in, take out the trash, and return the nation to it’s people.

That has been on mind today, too. I'm also wondering what the idiot students who gave ahmanutjob his warm welcome and standing ovations at Columbia U are feeling.

There a great cartoon mocking 0bama’s self-centered indifference at http://tehranbureau.com/2009/06/20/iran-updates/

I’m not sure what alternatives we really do have right now.

DoughtyOne, there are always alternatives. A very strong and immediate statement from the president placing the U.S. squarely on the side of the protesters would have been just the first step. Then there are several back-channel things we could do, such as:

--> moving arms to the Iranian opposition, like presidents Reagan and Bush 43 did in Afghanistan,
--> allowing the U.S. embassy to take in wounded protesters,
-->sending in CIA "advisors" like President Bush 43 did in Afghanistan and Iraq before sending in our troops.

Ocoward appears content issuing mealy mouthed platitudes.

I didn't pay attention to Ocoward's earlier statements. Shows what impact they had. So perhaps you're right that this is his strongest statement yet. However, it's pathetically weak and, to repeat, filled with nothing but meaningless platitudes.

Meanwhile, Obama takes his family for ice cream. True story folks.

Today? Please tell me you're kidding.

Well, I guess the vegetable are a thing of the past.

and Iran wants it too!

The sick part is, if we wanted to do it, we could take down the Iranian government now with ease and the protesters would get their freedom quickly. After all, we have significant forces near Iran.....

.....But the Totus has technically struck out, having refused to go to the mound. The Iranians will have to do it themselves if they want it.

It’s about ME!

One of the reasons child stars often turn to drugs or suicide is because the inordinate amount of adoration comes to a stop when the stardom does. For a small, developing person this is too much to handle.

The adoration our Dear Leader is now receiving has quite obviously gone to his head. Poor child Barack Obama was truly neglected and abandoned and left to the wolves. His mother's roll in the hay with an African colored his skin enough to make him the meal ticket for a host of underworld powers. They put him where they wanted him, and fed him the manna of attention he craves.

As long as the media keeps genuflecting he will be satisfied with anything. Scary to have a needy leader. It's not a good plan.

When I hear or read that “Obama said _________” whatever ........ the first thing that comes to mind is some guy named Obama who represents some third-world country, perhaps as a president or as a delegate to the UN. Barack Hussein Obama, President of the United States?

Sounds like a bad joke, but it’s actually tragic that 69.5 million ignorant fools voted for this socialist who is pretending to be a political moderate. While he’s pretending, he’s also busy: 1) rushing socialist laws through Congress before the public learns what they mean; 2) dictating to privately held companies how they conduct business; and 3) defying anyone to stop him.

“Preserve, protect and defend the Constitution” is not on his agenda. His objective is exactly the opposite.
