It turns out that the woman portrayed as an SEIU union leader in the commercial is a home health care worker from Fresno named Lisa Brown, who works for the state by caring for her son who has Down syndrome. One of our family members had Downs, and other family members cared for her all her life. They weren't paid by the state to be her caregivers. Plus, there are plenty of places where adults with Downs go to work or learn some independence. I do believe people with Downs are entitled to receive social security, though.
So, I wonder if this woman found a way through the system to collect both social security for her son AND be paid as his caregiver.
IMHO, leave the political ad as is.

I do believe people with Downs are entitled to receive social security, though. Without ever having paid anything into the system?

My grandson has Downs, his parents never got paid to take care of him, nor I. That is our responsibility, and we gladly accept it, as he is a blessing we would never had known. We don't look at him as a burden, we play the hand we were dealt and be happy with it.
How in the world does someone WORK for the state to take care of her own son. Sounds like she is on WELFARE, that is what she means by working for the state. Wording is all it is.
