My grandson has Downs, his parents never got paid to take care of him, nor I. That is our responsibility, and we gladly accept it, as he is a blessing we would never had known. We don't look at him as a burden, we play the hand we were dealt and be happy with it.

How in the world does someone WORK for the state to take care of her own son. Sounds like she is on WELFARE, that is what she means by working for the state. Wording is all it is.

Our neighbor’s daughter was profoundly disabled. She died 2 years ago when she 32 years old, mentally she was about 18 months-2 years. She could feed herself when food was put in front of her and could play with simple baby toys when they were given to her. She was wheelchair bound and had to be moved form her bed to the wheel chair. She had spina bifida and was paralyzed from the waist down. Her parents were paid by the state as part of her SSI to allow them to contract respite care. The mother could not always find competant worked so the state paid her.
One of the care workers got their daughter’s clothes wet when wahing her hair, she tried to use the blow-dryer on the poor girl to dry the clothes instead of changing her. The result third degree burns, poor girl couldn’t feel her legs so didn’t even know she was being burned.
