Disabled son's mom wants GOP to pull 'union bully' ad

The California Republican Party seemed to hit political paydirt in a YouTube ad that pilloried the Service Employees International Union for "bullying state leaders in the budget process."

The ad featured footage of an angry woman telling lawmakers that union members would work to defeat lawmakers who didn't vote their way.

It turns out that the woman portrayed as an SEIU union leader in the commercial is a home health care worker from Fresno named Lisa Brown, who works for the state by caring for her son who has Down syndrome.

Now Brown is calling on Republicans to pull the ad and "apologize for its content."

"I am the mother and care provider for a sweet young man with developmental disabilities who doesn't comprehend the implications of budget cuts on the table in Sacramento," Brown said a letter to the state Republican Party.

Brown, who is an SEIU member but not a union official, said: "Your attempt to label me a 'union bully' would be hilarious if it weren't so dangerous to people that I love.'"

The GOP ran the video to counter a $1 million SEIU advertising blitz featuring a television commercial that urges lawmakers to consider taxes on oil extraction, cigarettes and alcohol to avoid social services cuts.

In the selected clip in the GOP ad, Brown hardly treads easily on lawmakers:

"We helped to get you into office, and we got a good memory," she says angrily at a legislative budget hearing. "And come November, if you don't back our program, we'll help to get you out of office."

Brown said in her letter that she appeared at the hearing "to speak from my heart and in my own words" on behalf of services for the disabled.

One man’s decency and maturity is another man’s PC.

Let me brush away all the fluff and cut to the chase here. There is a woman who is renting out her son’s disability. She’s riding on his back, taking money stolen from people who would not otherwise give it to her to support herself. Some people, especially those of us who got through similar situations through hard work and personal responsibility, find that objectionable and in fact outrageous and infuriating.

If you want to quibble about how we express that outrage, fine. But anyone who would defend what the gubmint program is allowing or the fact that this woman is taking advantage of it (and you may be sure that she is legion) is simply not a Conservative.

Those are good points, goat granny. You do continue to pay and pay, long after the children have graduated. But, not everyone pays more in the long run. Plus, the cost varies state to state.

We ALL find what this woman is doing objectionable. What’s also objectionable are the juvenile jokes on this thread.

Do you understand English? Can you read? For the last time, Tired of Taxes, listen to me. We were not joking, and we were not laughing. We have both told you this repeatedly. Stop calling me a liar. I find it extremely objectionable.

The comment that you’re referring to, whether you realize it or not, was hg’s comment in post 40 to you.

You were courtesy pinged to that comment. And that comment made by hg was indeed rude and immature.

Maybe YOU weren’t joking or laughing, but that can’t be said for others, who did things like posting video clips of DS people just to laugh at.

When it gets to the point that someone interested in common courtesy for others less fortunate is labeled as *PC* things have deteriorated more than I thought.

You do need to read what ToT and I had to say and see what comments and who we were referring to.

So.. basically you think retards (or their handlers) should get "free" money and services?

Does that about cover it?

I was answering post #144 from ToT to me. ToT did not ping anyone else to that post. It was very presumptious of you to tell me that I don’t know to whom or to which post I am replying.

You admit that I am not joking or laughing, so why mention it?

If I walk up to a dd person and say, “You’re a retard” and start laughing, that would be despicable.

If humblegunner says to me that this whole issue is retarded, and neither the dd person nor his mother heard it, and no one who has skin in the game had his feelings hurt, then it’s just a comment that I happen to agree with.

It is definitely PC to insert oneself into a discussion and pitch a hissy fit over a word. That’s exactly how the left operates, and I won’t stand for it.

I have tried reasoned arguments with ToT and you, but you just ignore what I say, insist on your PC nonsense, and call me a liar. Not very nice of either of you, FRiends.

I have no intention of rereading what you or ToT said.

Oh, it is not. This is a public forum. If you don't want people commenting on your responses, make them FReepmail.

I suppose that you've never posted a comment in regards to a discussion someone else was having. Of course not.....

I have no intention of rereading what you or ToT said.

No surprise there.....

My grandson has Downs, his parents never got paid to take care of him, nor I. That is our responsibility, and we gladly accept it, as he is a blessing we would never had known. We don't look at him as a burden, we play the hand we were dealt and be happy with it.

How in the world does someone WORK for the state to take care of her own son. Sounds like she is on WELFARE, that is what she means by working for the state. Wording is all it is.

Our neighbor’s daughter was profoundly disabled. She died 2 years ago when she 32 years old, mentally she was about 18 months-2 years. She could feed herself when food was put in front of her and could play with simple baby toys when they were given to her. She was wheelchair bound and had to be moved form her bed to the wheel chair. She had spina bifida and was paralyzed from the waist down. Her parents were paid by the state as part of her SSI to allow them to contract respite care. The mother could not always find competant worked so the state paid her.
One of the care workers got their daughter’s clothes wet when wahing her hair, she tried to use the blow-dryer on the poor girl to dry the clothes instead of changing her. The result third degree burns, poor girl couldn’t feel her legs so didn’t even know she was being burned.

Yes, TheOldLady, I DO understand English, and I CAN read.

Therefore, I understand that when someone types, "In keeping with the subject of the thread... that's just retarded," and you respond, "Apropos," with a winkie, you're laughing and joking around.

And when someone posts a link to a video entitled, "The Retarded Policeman," making fun of a man with Downs as a police officer, and you respond, "YOMANK," you're laughing and joking around.

When I typed, "That was rude," a mature person would've realized this thread was neither the time nor the place for jokes. If she responded at all, she would've responded, "You're right. That went too far." And the subject would've been dropped. It certainly wouldn't have been taken to this level.

As metmom pointed out, this is a public forum. Be prepared for other people to respond to whatever you type here.

Humblegunner is a FRiend. You have no clue what a smiley from me means to him. We were not laughing at a retarded person. Stop calling me a liar, or I will have to assume you are one.

If you didn't watch that video and laugh helplessly at the masterful acting of the dd person who played the policeman, you have no sense of humor. There is a difference between derisive, hateful laughter intended to demoralize someone and jovial laughter with them. If you don't see the difference, you're too immature to have this discussion.

I don't agree that it was rude, so why should I say that you were right? You make no sense.

I welcome all responses, but I don't have to swallow your guff either.

It's sad to see you picking certain "progressive" ideas and running with them. They sound so good, and make you feel so superior to the people you're chastising. But you make yourself a change agent. Yes, it's only one issue, but you go at it like a DUmmy and contribute to their cause. You can say what you want, and I can say what I want. You will never convince me that your PC thought policing is right. Never.

“And when someone posts a link to a video entitled, “The Retarded Policeman,” making fun of a man with Downs as a police officer”

Wrong.
“The Retarded Policeman” is Josh Perry. He and his brother Scott
make the videos. Josh is an actor, he makes his living at it.
There are LOTS of “Retarded Policeman” videos.
You should subscribe and help him out.

And grow a sense of humor while you’re at it.

Lady,

You’ve been going on and on here, simply because I typed, “That was rude.”

You’re the type of person who doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “conservative”.

The term “conservative” isn’t defined as “someone who laughs at rude jokes.” And it’s not defined as “someone who makes offensive jokes.” If it were, people like Bill Mahr would be considered conservative, and so would the people wearing those offensive anti-Palin t-shirts.

The term “progressive” isn’t defined as “someone who doesn’t laugh at rude jokes” or “someone who refuses to make offensive jokes.” Have you listened to some “progressive” comedians? They’re nasty people.

A conservative wants limited government. So, a conservative would prefer the private sector handle charity cases. A progressive wants bigger government and thinks the government should take care of everyone. That’s what the difference is.

Wrong.

I wasn't wrong about anything here. You seem to have problems with comprehension. Why would you think I'd care who the actors are?

And grow a sense of humor while you’re at it.

If you think that video was funny, you don't know real humor. I can't imagine anyone laughing at that video.

For two people screaming, "PC!" because I said they were being rude in their use of the word "retarded" on this thread, the two of you sure got your panties in a wad over the word, "rude". OMG, I said you were being rude! How horrible of me. It must've hurt your feelings so much. RME.

You must realize your positions are contradictory. Apparently, the two of you have no problem feeding at the government trough when it suits you. Well, this woman is no different.

When it all comes down to it, there's no difference between the retiree collecting social security, the parent whose children attend public school K through 12, or the parent collecting for her disabled son. Each one paid a certain amount into the system, and each one expects something in return. They all have their own reasons for collecting.

For any one of them to criticize another for collecting is hypocritical. I've never collected anything in my life, and I'm not taking the criticism to the extreme that you are.

Josh is a Down's Syndrome guy.

He isn't feeding at the public trough.

He is having fun, being productive and making money.

You would prefer he shut up and take the dole?

I’ve been going on and on? And you, of course, have never replied to a single post of mine as I continually argue with nothing. Well, I agree that I’m arguing with nothing.

You don’t know the meaning of the words “straw men.”

Here it is: make up a bunch of things about someone, and then proceed to pompously berate the person over the delusions from your fevered brain. Everything you said about me is between your own ears and nowhere else.

You’re the definition of a change agent, useful idiot, and not worth talking to.
