This North Korean ship is known for having carried "proliferation materials," a senior U.S. official says.
North Korea is preparing to launch a missile over Pacific Ocean waters, Japanese media reported Thursday.
With missile interceptors and radar equipment deployed in and near Hawaii, "we are in a good position should it become necessary to protect American territory," Gates said Thursday.

Can the NKs salvo missiles, or are they limited to one shot at a time?
Why would they waste a nuke on a dot in the vast ocean of the Pacific?? Pffft! This is all BS talk.
Just big talk...”we’re ready” indeed. If it were a real threat then launch the birds NOW!
I hope this helps everyday Americans to see missile defense and national defense is worth the money and that taxpayers dollar need to go to this area and not ACORN and unions.
Just knock it out before it launches! If the NK’s can’t prove their technolgy works then they will have difficulty selling it.
In terms of long range missiles? They have two launch sites capable of firing their longest range missiles. They have recently moved a missile to each of these sites.
A more effective defense would be a B-52 Arc-Light strike!
Didn’t Gates say the last time NK fired a missle that we couldn’t do anything about (stopping?) it?
You wouldn’t have to worry about it hitting Hawaii if you blew it up on the launch pad.
The PRNK has unilaterally withdrawn from the 1953 armistice. They’ve tested multiple nuclear devices, violating countless international and UN agreements. And, they’re developing ICBM capabilities.
The best way to deal with big problems is to take care of them when they were small problems.
probably one at a time.
Interesting that Obama is willing to utilize anti-missile defense systems to protect one of his boyhood homes, but seeks to cut money for those systems elsewhere.
Fry them everytime they put them on the pad.
Then send an official communication expressing our regret that North Korea has hit such a technical obstacle in their ballistic missile program, expressing how we know how frustrating and difficult it can be, that the technology is very complex and that until they overcome their difficulties it is likely that ever one they try and launch will explode like the last one.
Wing attack. Plan R.
We should zap it as soon as it hits the stratosphere. If we can’t, shame on us.
See post 14.
The 0bama White House will do nothing but spew words even if the rockets land in Pearl Harbor.
I can see it now, 0bama "the messiah" standing on the beach delivering his famous Hawaii speech to the incoming.
Full quote:
“The ground-based interceptors are clearly in a position to take action. So, without telegraphing what we will do, I would just say ... I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary, to protect the American territory,”
