Democrats to “welcome” foreign tourists by taxing them into staying home. When does this end?
The Collins Report ^ | June 19, 2009 | Kevin "Coach" Collins

Posted on 06/19/2009 6:07:51 AM PDT by jmaroneps37

Liberal Democrats never recognize the power of taxation to change individual behavior while they are lusting after our tax dollars.

As socialists they have very limited knowledge of the concept of dynamic scoring in taxing policy (the effect of taxation on how people live their everyday lives).

Conservatives understand taxation changes consumer attitudes and behavior, but Liberals only admit this when they’re voting to raise taxes on behaviors they claim not to like such as smoking drinking alcoholic beverages gambling and cruising on large yachts.

Simple observation continually proves conservatives are right and liberals are wrong on this point.

USA Today recently trumpeted the “reassuring” news that increased tobacco taxes are expected to reduce smoking, while Science Daily said, “Increasing cigarette taxes is an effective strategy for reducing tobacco….”

Evidence like this makes the latest bit of foolishness from the slow witted Democrats puzzling. The Senate is scheduled to consider a bill to increase the taxes international visitors pay to visit America and spend their money.

The ironically named Travel Promotion Act of 2009 will fund yet another new government agency to promote tourism by – you guessed it; raising taxes on tourists.

The depth of denial on the part of the stumble bums running our lives is breathtaking. Each day we are reminded there are no adults around and the children have taken over the schoolhouse. Bart Simpson must have kidnapped Principal Skinner.

It would be hard to pick a time when raising taxes on foreign tourists was a worse idea. We are in competition with the whole world for a shrinking pool of Euros Yen and Yuan. Last year international tourism put more than $100 billion into our economy, money we could certainly use now. This is stupid beyond belief. Do these dopes really think this will help?

Very, very few, IMO. I’d like to have some respect for Congress, but consider some of the individuals who got voted in - yikes!

Typical lib think. If it is any type of commerce, tax it. The consumer is going to participate in that activity regardless of how much tax is impose. OH WAIT, at the same time, they claim they are working on reducing smoking by taxing it. Now which is is? Several eastern states are increasing their income taxes and expect the residents to stay where they are and pay up. Then the rich/smart ones move out leaving the taxing authorities in a lurch. DUH.

It ends when tax receipts fall a lot AND we elect some thinking people.

I'd say anyone, anyone from either side of the aisle that goes along with this ... um ... "idea" is just plain stupid. Period.

The notion of promoting something by making it more expensive is fundamentally insane. The only place this has been shown to work is with designer names in fashion, cosmetics, and similar industries. Maybe this provides some insight into the mindset of the elitists now running the administration and congress.

after eight years of bemoaning declining foreign tourist numbers and telling us it was all due to dislike for Bush and Cheney...

We long ago raised the taxes and fees on legitimate visa applicants and subsidize those who come to our country illegally. I guess you get what you pay for.

"Typical lib think"

9 dem and 9 GOP cosponsors, including Pete Sessions of TX.

A Public Private Partnership.

Tourist industry approves.

Considering the very high tourist taxes, how can anyone complain about 10 bucks. In nicer hotels, the nightly tourist tax is higher than $10.
