Carla Bruni to perform for Nelson Mandela

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy will break her pledge never to sing in concert while she is First Lady of France when she performs in New York next month to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday.

The 41-year old former supermodel will sing a duet with Dave Stewart, the Eurythmics star at New York's Radio City music hall on July 18, in a concert to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy toured regularly before marrying President Nicolas Sarkozy last year, but stopped public performances after taking becoming First Lady, mainly for security concerns and because the image of a touring pop star did not sit well with her new official status

.But she has now convinced her husband and Elysee Palace officials to allow her to perform at the one-off gig at New York's Radio City music hall on July 18.

However she convinced her husband to allow her to make an exceptional, one-off concert featuring soul legend Aretha Franklin, 67, and Cyndi Lauper, 55.

An Elysée source to France's Le Post website: "Sarkozy has agreed only because it is a concert for Mr Mandela, and because it's not a tour to promote her music career."

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy, whose former boyfriends include two rock legends, Eric Clapton and Sir Mick Jagger, has produced three albums. Her last, Comme Si De Rien N'était sold only 90,000 copies last year.

Critics suggested she had been chosen to perform more due to her celebrity status than her musical notoriety.

I receive a monthly audio magazine in French. She’s featured on one of them. I’m sure there are people who like her singing... but it’s not that great, imo.

Nelson Mandela?

One of the great frauds of history. Just another commie and socialist.

It’s called Champs-Elysées. It has selections from different aspects of French culture—museums, restaurants, politics, movies, literature, etc. The same company also produces Spanish, German, and Italian audio magazines.

Thank you for the info. I have heard of it, but never had any reviews. Do you get their newsletter as well?

I don’t get a newsletter. You get a choice between casette and CD (CD about twice as much), and with that, you get a transcription with some words translated and some explanations of cultural items (for instance, a note in one volume described how a society for assisting hospitalized teens was formed by a famous person whose young daughter committed suicide). For an additional fee, you can get an extra CD and workbook designed for people who need extra help with the language (I don’t get that).

I think Champs-Elysées is a really good program, I’ve been a subscriber for years. Since I don’t get much chance to practice speaking French, it does a lot to help me keep my language skill.
