In the midst of a recession, the New York Times wants to make sure you remember the people most affected by these “tough economic times.”
That’s why they brought us articles like “Parental Lifelines, Frayed to Breaking.” In this down economy, the Times seems to believe that people like Eric Gross deserve to have their plight publicized and to receive your sympathy.
Eric, a 26-year-old construction worker, is reeling from the news that his parents might not be able to help him buy a one-bedroom New York City condo that’s going for $600,000. Let’s all shed a tear for Eric and the trust fund kids of Williamsburg who find themselves having to actually work to pay the exorbitant rents of their hipster neighborhood...

If the power went out for over 30 days, kids like this one and his parents don’t stand a prayer of surviving. I doubt they could forage for themselves for more than 4-5 days, tops; and would likely be killed during the first real food riot in their area.

Yup, they'd starve pretty darned quick. FWIW, I've been out of a job for some time but stocked up on supplies last year. Without even a real plan for survival in place, we've been able to eat fairly well just on what was put away for nearly 2 months. I'm looking forward to restocking with this recent experience in mind.

Those kids need their asses kicked. Then everybody at The Times involved with that article, from the reporterette up to and including Pinch Sulzberger, needs their asses kicked.

Certainly these children (as adults) were ill-served by their misguided parents, but the article focuses not on the parents, but the plight of these ‘adult’ adolescents.
It’s too easy to live down to the level of freudenschade with articles such as this, but while I pity the distorted adults these kids became, it’s the parents I feel the most sorrow for.
They are truly sad excuses for parents.
This is the tripe that feeds class warfare!

I disagree with this point. We're interested - though probably not sympathetic - because it's an occasion of schadenfreud and lets us feel superior.
You should pitch that as a reality show. I’d tune in to see a bunch of these types dumped in the woods. No activities, no “challenges”, no voting off. Just cameras on about a dozen people having to survive in the wilderness with only a bare minimum survival kit.
It would be interesting to watch them try to set up some type of social order, delegate tasks, work together...mostly I think they would get some interesting arguments.
Maybe Ted Nugent should host. :)
