SACRAMENTO More budget gridlock appears on the way as legislative Democrats say they'll push for a tax increase and the governor says he'll veto it.
For weeks, Democrats crafted a response to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to balance a $24.3 billion budget deficit. Democrats don't like the governor's plan to close more than 200 state parks and eliminate core welfare programs such as CalWORKS and Healthy Families.
Instead, the Democrats who control the State Legislature have proposed dialing back the governor's suggested cuts and replacing the lost savings with taxes on oil and tobacco as well as surcharges on vehicles and home insurance premiums.

Smokers-When are we going to be given the keys to the city everywhere in the u.s? We’re lepers, but supposed to carry the entire country on our backs.
I’ll bet a pastle of state beach RV camps are about to be chained shut. Never mind that they make tons of money off those camp sights.
You really have to wonder about the leadership in this state. It’s as if they emptied out the asylums and placed the inhabitants in state capital offices.
My wife works in health care in CA and told me that when she was doing prenatal care that was paid for by “Healthy Families,” at least two-thirds of the mothers had no social security number.
No kidding, they should be holding parades and erecting statues.
"Closing the national monument is an old budget trick" that the California budgeteers are copying in order to gain sympathy and support for their tax increase. I suspect that the cost of running the parks is miniscule compared to the "bennies" the State hands out. Furthermore, many common-sense options exist to keep the parks open, such as increased user fees, increased dependency on volunteer work, reduction of hours of operation, etc.
Voters overwhelming said, “No new taxes”. Man, these guys are dense.
More money for the private RV parks and campgrounds.
There, fixed it for you ;)
About 234 years ago, we had a revolution because of high tax rates (far lower than what we see now!) and a tyrranical government. Will it happen again?
That could be, but doesn’t the state own the prime real estate along our beaches? I’d hate to see places like Refugio, Leo Carillo and many others be closed down.
I imagine the state does have some recreation areas along the beach. Now from out there, so don’t know details.
Campers may have to go to OR or WA if they want to camp at the beach - CA’s loss.
There are great campgrounds in neighboring states where campers can go and they will. Being a camper, I know we are a determined lot. Have to get our fix and it doesn’t have to be in our home state.
D1 when was the last time you went to Refugio, I have not been there in 10yrs, camped there as a kid in the 60’s.. used “white gas” to get the tar off the feet
Simply speculating, but if the Crown had raised taxes on tobacco the way FedZilla and StateZilla have been doing, that tea party would’ve been a tabak party.
Ghost, lookit the bright side of the entertainment value as every activity under the sun will be taxed.
I suppose we could envision a pack of smokes at 20 bucks.
Went there last summer with my brother and his family. Had a great time. The place is in fairly good shape, no complaints. Well, I will mention that some idiots had come to the park with their 12 to 120volt converter and were watching the olympic until the wee hours of the morning. Thankfully the camp host put an end to that.
Why would you bring your big screen (not kidding) to the campsite, rather than stay home and watch what you wanted to on the tele. There are certainly some stange ones out there.
I’m talking a 50 to 60” screen in the campsite with sound blaring until 2 to 3 am.
OH man how inconsiderate..on vacation to enjoy the piece and quite.. glad they put an end to it.. going to have to get up there again
Ticks vow to suck more blood.
Good. It’s a nice beach. We certainly had a good time up there. Took lots of photos and went kayaking, hiking along the coast.
