‘Conservative’ and ‘Republican’ no longer synonymous [were they ever?]
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2009-06-17 | Aaron Blake & Reid Wilson

Expect to start hearing something like this very soon on the campaign trail: “I’m a conservative Republican — emphasis on the ‘conservative’!”

While the label “Republican” is polling about as low as it’s ever polled, its part-time synonym — “conservative” — is the most popular ideological descriptor in politics.

A Gallup poll this week found that the number of Americans defining themselves as conservative is at its highest point in 20 years, at 40 percent.

That compared to 35 percent saying they are moderate and 21 percent saying they are liberal.

The results track closely with another Gallup poll, from May, which found more Americans defining themselves as “pro-life” than “pro-choice” for the first time since it began asking the question in 1995. And it wasn’t even close — 51 percent to 42.

A conservative resurgence? Possibly. A boon to the Republican Party? Hardly.

Overlay those numbers with Gallup’s recent finding that 53 percent of voters identify themselves as Democrats or lean that way, while just 39 percent identify as Republicans or lean that way.

There’s something wrong with that picture: 40 percent conservative, versus 39 percent linking themselves with Republicans. It means there are plenty of conservatives out there who are done with the GOP, and independents aren’t replacing them.

On top of all that, even those who still identify with the party are unhappy with it; Gallup found 38 percent of them having an unfavorable opinion of their own party.

It seems a golden opportunity for Republican candidates to start emphasizing the C-word and leaving behind the R-word.

Oh DUH moment of the day. About time someone recognized that we conservatives are looking for a CONSERVATIVE party. We might be about to go and make up our own. For sure I would vote for a FReeper!

The objective here should be to identify the RINOs and, if not purge them, then deny them leadership positions, break up their liberalization cabal, and restrict funding to their campaigns. It is called party discipline, and in short it means, “Either you vote the party line and quit trying to undermine us, or you are fired.”

You should never vote for me, unless you've been drinking heavily. ;)

Whatever position I could get elected to, my first and only goal would be to lobby to have the position deleted, removed, and banned.

Add up the people who are socially conservative, culturally conservative, economically conservative, and fiscally conservative and that's a large part of the country.

But the social and cultural conservatives aren't always free market economic conservative, and the deficit-cutting fiscal conservatives aren't either. Free marketeers in turn aren't always socially or culturally conservative. And a lot of people who call themselves "fiscal conservatives" are liberal about everything else.

Republicans at least attempted to bring most of these people together in one party. If they're gone, they aren't going to be replaced by some Conservative Party that does the job any better. Rather, there'd be a loose soup of groups that just can't get together with each other. But the GOP isn't gone yet.

Does that sound conservative ???

They voted for gun control ???
Does that sound conservative ???

They call illegal aliens “immigrants” and want “an easy way to citizenship”
Does that sound conservative ???

They want to raise your taxes for “global sports teams”
Does that sound conservative ???

They want to make China a favored nation..
Does that sound conservative ???

They think we are too hard on Iran..
Does that sound conservative ???

They think Israel should be penalized..
Does that sound conservative ???

I wish you were right, but I have my doubts. The GOP Establishment sets the rules for the Party, & they are composed of internationalist Neocons who have little use for the sovereignty of the United States, the Constitution, individual liberty, our nation's Christian heritage, the concept of state's rights, & limited government.

I will have to see MAJOR changes in the attitudes of those who pull the strings @ the GOP before I think otherwise.
