Times change, and in the case of the 2010 governor's race, so do political endorsements, apparently. Just ask GOP Rep. John Campbell of Newport Beach: he's switched his backing. A few months ago, Campbell issued glowing statement endorsing California GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner -- and this week, the 48th CD representative issued another glowing endorsement statement, this backing former eBay CEO Meg Whitman.
Here's Campbell on Poizner last December, talking about his backing of the state Insurance Commissioner in the 2010 governor's race: "Steve is the right man at the right time for California. As our nation grapples with so many complex and difficult issues we need leaders like Steve who have the ability to develop innovative solutions.''
Here's Campbell this week: "Meg Whitman is the best candidate to effectively manage our state, establish fiscal discipline in Sacramento and usher in the pro-growth tax relief our economy desperately needs...she will reinvigorate the Republican Party by attracting new people and give us the best chance of winning in November."

Whitman almost ruined eBay. She’s another Carly Fiorina.
And her business strategies were *such* a winner for McCain!
Who really is the most conservative candidate running for ‘10 California Governor?
I guess her money made the change!
A version of Who really is the most electable candidate and the sort of compromised, partisan thinking that got California where it is today.
Want to change the state? Draw a line in the sand. Challenge the California GOP to run a conservative or risk your support. If no official GOP gubernatorial candidate meets your requirement in the primary, write in a candidate's name, who in your opinion, can get the job done.
If California's GOP, gubernatorial primary sends another cloaked liberal to do battle with real liberals, stop donating to their cause. It's worse than wasted money, as the Austrian succinctly demonstrates.
Stop holding your nose at the ballot box.
There isn’t. None of the above.
hard to answer that.. none of them really. Campbell is probably the closest thing to a conservative candidate for now, that gets any coverage anyway/
Gary Coleman and Mary Carey aren’t in it .. yet..
Tom McClintock would seriously make a terrific Governor of California, IMHO, if only he could actually win such a race, but California is too leftist for McClintock to have any serious chance of winning such a race.
Gary Coleman is a moderate, and Mary Carey is a leftist. I remember looking at their positions on issues during the California recall election.
lol.. I rest my case. ;-)
Leave it to me to be looking at Mary Carey’s positions on ISSUES, instead of...well, you know.
The key is party support and neither the California GOP or their primary money source, the New Majority, are going to sponsor a conservative. A conservative executive, with the help of a conservative plurality in either branch of the legislature, could control spending, effectively dislodging the New Majority's principals from the public trough.
just like aRnold, she raised folks hopes too.. ;-)
You are thinking of Tom Campbell, not John Campbell. Tom is a former Congressman who now lives in Irvine and is thinking about running for governor in 2010. They are not related. Irvine is part of John’s congressional district.
Tom is NOT a conservative.
