He was forced out by Jimmah. Well known fact at the time that Jimmah pulled the props out from under the Shah. To this day I have RATS tell me "Well the Shah just treated his people so terrible that he had to do it".
Of course, under the Shah, women were treated as equals. The country was fairly modern. The aftermath of the Carter debacle was to allow radical Islam to finally get a foothold in a large country. We have seen what that has led to. Yeah, we had some stuff with the Islamists before, but Carter allowed the flood gates of terror to open. President Reagan stopped them for a time with his bombing of Libya. But when Clinton came in they were emboldened. W got serious and kept them at bay after 911, but now weakness is upon us again.

The people in the streets obviously don’t agree with you.
But even if they’re wrong and you’re right, it would be a matter of HUGE significance if the “street” should force the mullahs to overturn the official election verdict.
Such an event would give increased energy to the democracy movement and would probably cause the government to come apart at the seams — with some mullahs and some Rev Guards supporting one faction, some supporting another. At that point, full-scale civil war is a distinct possibility.
The PROBLEM...is the mad mullahs that actually run Iran, and THEY control the military.
I WANT to encourage the Iranian people to fight for their freedom, but let's be realistic: Ahmadinejad was supposed to be a "moderate" too.
Let's pray for the safety of those kids in the streets.

And divert the military from controlling the streets? I doubt it.
I think virulently anti-American as well, but it's probably irrelevant since these massive street protests will die out and be as quickly forgotten as the short discussion of whether Nancy Pelosi will lose the speaker's seat over the CIA waterboarding debacle.
I've watched two movies recently about Iran -- 'The Queen And I', a documentary of Queen Farah living in exile filmed by a pro-Communist expat living in Sweden, and another German film 'Letters To The President' about the cult of personality around Ahmadinejad.
The movies show that Iranians of all types are completely screwed up ideologically. Everyone's an extremist, even the 'moderates'. They've got no sense of proportion because they've never been tranquil, secure, had liberty, or lived without fear of the monarchy, mullahs, communists, or whomever is in charge at the present. Everyone is a political nutburger of some stripe.
Even if Ahmadinejad goes, and I contend that he won't, whoever replaces him will likewise be some virulently anti-Western/anti-USA incompetent screwball.
The why did the Army, this past weekend, declare it's “neutrality”, which is widely seen as an invitation to revolution?
No, if the army decides it's had enough of seeing imported Hezbollah militants killing and running roughshod over it's own people, you'll see that the mullahs won't be able to get out of the country fast enough.

I don’t think the Army is on the streets. There was a supposed statement yesterday from the Army that they wouldn’t attack their country’s own citizens. Such “neutrality” could be the deciding factor as to whether the mullahs can be overthrown.
On the other hand, the police and the Revolutionary Guards are separate organizations from the Army. So the key to the mullahs’ survival may be whether the cops and the RG have the necessary weaponry and determination to suppress the popular movement. Only time will tell.
This illustrates an important difference between here and there. In America, millions of us are armed, and a sizeable minority are experts at using those arms. If we had this sort of attack by government against its citizens, the attackers would soon be dead.

When it gets to that point I will think this may make a difference to us. Until then it's just one hostile regime in danger of being replaced by another.
