Cable news normally serves as the front line for breaking news, but the channels largely took the weekend off as Tehran exploded in protests after Irans presidential election.
The performance of the American cable news, especially CNN, spawned an online protest by thousands on Saturday and Sunday, showing that viewers can try to pressure news organizations about their coverage in real time via the Internet. Fox News Channel and MSNBC also were said to have covered the protests in limited ways.

What do you expect from the Communist News Network?
This seems to have gotten fairly little coverage all around. I remember a time when they would break into prime time with news like this. It’s pop culture dominated landscape now where serious international news is given short shrift.
CNN is a lot of things...bad things...but a news source?...not so much...
More indications of CNN’s paid sympathy for terrorist nations.
CNN is the last place I would go for reliable news. Sorry, CNN, but that’s the way it is.
CNN will notice and report on the following:
One Republican trashing another Republican
Five Gay Men Protesting anything
Six Members of NOW complaining about any conservative
Eight Blacks angry with cops
Thirty Union Members picketing a company

Here’s the groups that “don’t make the CNN cut”:
1,000 democrats criticizing one corrupt democrat
400,000 tea party protesters
A million Iranians bravely standing up to their oppressors.
What is happening in Iran is clear evidence of what a mistake Hussein made in Cairo.
I suspect CNN may have allowed itself to be intimidated again by the powers-that-be, much like it did in Iraq.
Iranians are slamming CNN & The NY Slimes for not covering the protests. Join the club...
I gave up on CNN long ago.
Today...I’m taking a second look at Fox.
They promised live coverage of the Netanyahu speech. They carried about 5 minutes (if that much) and cut away to a panel discussion.
Something is wrong with this picture.
The Times will cover the demonstrations when it can figure out a way to make Obama look like a genius. Or when it can make the protestors out to be bad sports who are standing in the way of diplomacy.
Old Iranian women in burkahs where seen complaining that they may have accidentally voted for the wrong candidate. The proof was nearly 3,000 votes for Pat Buchanan.
Although CNN was not around yet, do you remember wall to wall coverage and legitimacy the media gave to khomeini riots as carter went about undermining the Shah’s government?
That’s what infuriates Iranians who remember so vividly the media culpability and solidarity with islamist thugs during carter.
So true
Great post! Thank you.
Don’t forget the spontaneous 10,000 strong riot of blacks in Philidelphia the other day. Not one word on the cable news or regular news..just a blip in the local philly news.

They beat some man into a coma. Not sure if he is alive still or not.
Real-Time Criticism of CNN's Iran Coverage
Slightly before my time but interesting.
