WASHINGTON, DC - The nation's longest-serving United States senator remained under a doctor's care this week in Washington.
Senator Robert C. Byrd, 91, a West Virginia Democrat, was said by his staff to be receiving treatment for a staph infection.
Media accounts have said that Byrd, who has been in frail physical condition for some time, has been confined to a Washington, D.C. area hospital since May 15.
Byrd's spokesman, Jesse Jacobs, would not reveal the site where Byrd was confined when asked last week. He also would not discuss the severity of Byrd's illness. A source, usually reliable, said that the senator was not, in fact, in a hospital but was being treated at a private home in suburban Washington.
Regardless, Byrd's ill health has caused an outpouring of public support and concern for the veteran lawmaker. The Sunday (Charleston) Gazette-Mail contained a lengthy article about Byrd and his friendship with United States Senator Ted Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat. The story noted that Byrd opposed Kennedy's brother, John, when he was a candidate for president in the West Virginia primary in 1960. But when Kennedy won the Democratic nomination, Byrd was one of his staunchest supporters, according to the story by Paul Nyden.
Byrd's health and advanced age have led to speculation in recent years that he might step down. Sources close to Byrd have insisted, however, that he has no intention of doing so.

He says he 'repudiated" his past membership in the KKK. If he did, it was awful late in life- he has grey hair in this image.
Just how old was he when he was the Imperial Kleagle or whatever they called him.? How many other DEMOCRATS are Klan Members?
What things did he do on his way up into LEADERSHIP POSITION in the KKK in the 50's and 60's?
I hope he suffers and feels every pain signal his cruel body sends to his twisted brain.
yeah, and lautenberg had a brain transplant a few years ago.
TERM. LIMITS.
How is it that they vote while incapacitated?
Oh wait...n/m.
Most likely as he has his name chiseled all over that place.
Anyone thinking "A Weekend at Bernie's"? I swear it would not surprise me one bit with the bunch running the country right now.
Maybe it isn't a physical ailment. Could be that he is "confined" in a mental facility?
lol on #’s 6 & 7. . .;^).
Staph is murderous. . .So; if he ‘steps down’ and/or ‘out’; what happens? Anyone in the wings for W.Va.?
p.s. (’anyone in the wings for W.Va.?’) - besides ACORN, that is. . .
Shall we include those who need a checkup from the neck up?
I’v seen that pic dozens of times on FR. Can anyone vouch for its authenticity?
Oh, man. I can't say what I want to say. Nope. Can't do it. I should just go to another thread before I accidentally say what I want to say. Or I should just smash my fingers with a hammer. Grrrrrrrrrr. Gotta go.
I couldn't have said it better! The one difference is the MSM condemns one and praises the other as 'the conscience of the Senate'.
US Senate-—infirmary, psycho ward, nursing home, hospice and mausoleum complete with a shrine to memorialize the death of the US Constitution.
oh thats for real allright- dont worry about that
he admits it too
You mean ‘the’ Sen. Byrd ‘Droppings’?
I thought the Republicans were the party of the old guys.
