If the Republican Party is in danger of being marginalized as a conservative, white male Southern enclave, is Haley Barbour the longtime Washington power broker and current Mississippi governor the best person to turn things around?
Many rank-and-file Republicans and party leaders say yes, as the 61-year-old Barbour prepares to ramp up his national profile this month with back-to-back trips to the early presidential voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.
Barbour will headline fundraisers in both states, but says the visits are part of his duties as incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. Both states have governors' races next year.
"I've told everyone I know that every Republican ought to be focused on governors' races in 2009 and the 2010 elections," Barbour said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Haley Barbour should do well. I don’t know how he’ll stand up to all the endless gotcha questions he might just lose it and beat up Richard Wolfe or one of those guys— but aside from that— he’s pretty good.
Well, I still have a question ot two for Mr. Barbour regarding his partners in the "Caucus Room", Terry McAuliffe, Thomas Downey, a former Democratic congressman and now a lobbyist, and other lobbyists. .

Some of us were hoping that Hayley Barbour would run instead of John McCain. A good man, in my estimation.
He will find that IA and NH are among the most liberal of states now too.
The primary states need to be changed now. That will keep us from the same POS that lost last time.
You can keep Miss Governor. I'll stick with Mrs. Governor.
Go Haley - the guy who almost singlehandedly saved Congress from slipping back to the ‘rats in ‘98 - he was all over the tube in the weeks before the election talking about Clinton’s corruption, debating libs, and rallying the base to enough of a turnout to provide a few seat margin for the ‘pubs when the dust had cleared - feisty and shrewd, he’d be a welcome change from our last disaster of a candidate.......
Yes , good guy but ... over obese fat guys don’t get elected President in modern times.
Lots of time to diet between now and 2012......
I’ll consider Barbour.
He'll get a good strong look from me. While I like Sarah Palin, I'm hoping for some fresh faces in the 2012 primaries.
If Baraq screws up as badly as I think he will, a southern, white, conservative good old boy might be the perfect candidate to recapture the White House. The perfect opposite of Baraq.
