A MOTHER desperate to have a second child has told how she lost her last IVF embryo when the NHS implanted it into the wrong patient.
When the other woman found out that the embryo was not hers, she aborted it.
Details of the blunder raise fresh questions about the way IVF clinics are regulated.
The Sunday Times has previously revealed that women undergoing fertility treatment have had their eggs fertilised with the wrong sperm.
Deborah, the woman who lost her chance of another baby, is so traumatised by the error that she is reluctant to risk further IVF to have a longed-for sibling for her son, Jamie, 6.
Because Deborah is 40 her prospects of having another child with her boyfriend, Paul, 38, are slim and diminishing.
Deborah, who does not want to disclose her surname, said: “I will never forget the moment the hospital broke the news to us. Initially, the hospital told me there had been an accident in the lab and that the embryo had been damaged. I thought that someone had, perhaps, dropped the embryo dish.
“I remember thinking: ‘That’s our last hope gone – we will never have another child.’ I left the hospital feeling totally shell-shocked.
“When we went back to the hospital two days later and we were told the truth about my embryo being given to someone else I was so angry.”
Deborah, a healthcare worker, and Paul, who have been together for 17 years, went on the NHS waiting list for fertility treatment in 1996. After two failed attempts, Jamie was born on the third cycle in 2003.

Pithy and astute observation. I was going to yell something about these people adopting if they wanted a child so bad, but your post made me realize that these scumbags are way too selfish to be entrusted to raise children.
Very, very well put.
I cannot comprehend how this woman could do this. It is sickening to me.
IVF violates the rights of the child: it deprives him of his filial relationship with his parental origins and can hinder the maturing of his personality. It objectively deprives conjugal fruitfulness of its unity and integrity, it brings about and manifests a rupture between genetic parenthood, gestational parenthood, and responsibility for upbringing. This threat to the unity and stability of the family is a source of dissension, disorder, and injustice in the whole of social life. This was addressed by (then Cardina)l Joseph Ratzinger, as head of the Congregation of the Faith, who wrote:
Conception in vitro is the result of the technical action which presides over fertilization. Such fertilization is neither in fact achieved nor positively willed as the expression and fruit of a specific act of the conjugal union. In homologous IVF and ET, therefore, even if it is considered in the context of 'de facto' existing sexual relations, the generation of the human person is objectively deprived of its proper perfection: namely, that of being the result and fruit of a conjugal act in which the spouses can become "cooperators with God for giving life to a new person".(50) These reasons enable us to understand why the act of conjugal love is considered in the teaching of the Church as the only setting worthy of human procreation.

Cardinal Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI.
I still wonder why IVF would be covered by any health insurance plan or government health plan. While it is nice for everyone who wants children to be able to have them, I don’t think it is fair to raise the cost of the “hit by a bus” type of medical insurance to pay for procedures like IVF.
It’ like you get a wonderful seven-course meal, but you deline because you only wanted a cheesburger.
...eyes rolling.
For my first response, I’m going to look at this purely from a money and contract point of view.
The idiot doctors screwed up. Now they need to pay up. Big time. The lady that got the wrong embryo can’t be blamed for terminating. She already paid mucho bucks for the procedure, and got gyped. How can she be expected to ADDITIONALLY give up 9 months of her life enduring hardship for someone elses mistake?
If I were king of the world and my word was law, this is how I would rule on this situation....the doctors owe both ladies a free child. The lady that aborted the embryo should’ve been offered a deal she couldn’t refuse to keep the embryo and give it up after born. that deal should’ve been offered to her by the doctors that are responsible for the screw up. The doctors owe the lady that got her embryo stolen a big chunk of money for a)lying to her, and b) allowing her child to be killed
After the doctors settle up with the two ladies for what they owe, they will be stripped of their licenses and they will be imprisoned for not less than 50 years.
And now there will be a new law. Anyone that has EVER had an abortion will NEVER be allowed to have fertility treatments EVER. And vice versa. Anyone that has EVER had fertility treatments will NEVER be allowed to have an abortion EVER.
You pick one side of the fence or the other and YOU STAY THERE...until I decide how to outlaw abortion and what the penalty for it should be.
Here’s a thought, how about adoption?
That sort of thing is bound to happen when people mess around with “playing god”. (Non-cap intentional...)
One thing to remember is that women struggling with infertility are counting every month that ticks by. If they have a miscarriage, it’s not just losing a baby, it’s two or three months of pregnancy and two or three months of recovery. A full term pregnancy is nine months and six months recovery. You would hope the mother carrying the baby would have pity for another infertile woman, if not for the child. She probably thought of falling in love with the child and heartbreak to give it away.
The Orthodox Jews have something called the Shiphrah project, or some such, after the Hebrew midwife in Moses’s time, because it is imperative on them not to get any sperm, eggs, or embryos mixed up. Might make sense for everyone.
OH, SHUT UP.
Ah, the joys of the “public option”.
Your has to be one of the most idiotic post I’ve ever seen on FR. Good job.
Thank you. Now learn grammar and spelling.
Idiot.

Really?
My folks were divorced. Should I have been killed at that point?
My exwife and I divorced.
Son Michael is in Afghanistan whacking terrorists.
Would you like to tell him he is a worthless piece of trash?
That he has no right to exist?
Bonzer luck with that.
See my post 17 — my post didn’t come out the way I meant.
One word sentences now, eh? Very impressive. I guess we all know what your critiques are worth now, don’t we?
