Hovering on High: Obama Surveys the World
Townhallcom ^ | June 12, 2009 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 06/12/2009 4:23:53 AM PDT by Kaslin

WASHINGTON -- When President Obama returned from his first European trip, I observed that while over there he had been "acting the philosopher-king who hovers above the fray mediating" between America and the world. Now that Obama has returned from his "Muslim world" pilgrimage, even the left agrees. "Obama's standing above the country, above -- above the world. He's sort of God," Newsweek's Evan Thomas said to a concurring Chris Matthews, reflecting on Obama's lofty perception of himself as the great transcender.

Not that Obama considers himself divine. (He sees himself as merely messianic, or, at worst, apostolic.) But he does position himself as hovering above mere mortals, mere country, to gaze benignly upon the darkling plain beneath him where ignorant armies clash by night, blind to the common humanity that only he can see. Traveling the world, he brings the gospel of understanding and godly forbearance. We have all sinned against each other. We must now look beyond that and walk together to the sunny uplands of comity and understanding. He shall guide you. Thus:

(A) He told Iran that, on the one hand, America once helped overthrow an Iranian government, while on the other hand "Iran has played a role in acts of hostage-taking and violence against U.S. troops and civilians." (Played a role?!) We have both sinned; let us bury the past and begin anew.

I'm not so feel good about his trip...just another show as far as I can see.

In the meantime, we have a terrorist in NY and we're shoving more terrorists to Bermuda.

Obama undoubtedly thinks he is demonstrating historical magnanimity with all these moral equivalencies and self-flagellating apologetics. On the contrary. He's showing cheap condescension, an unseemly hunger for applause and a willingness to distort history for political effect.... And hovering above it all, above country and history, is a sign not of transcendence but of a disturbing ambivalence toward one's own country.

Bump.

Charles, I watched the debate and have never thought the same about you since. You were part and parcel in the buildup of this light-weight socialist, this propagandists-created con-man.

In plain words, he has Narcissistic Personality Disorder and those who worship him think it’s what makes him a ‘god’ of this world.

Do his numbers add up to 666? I know that if you put all of his name’s definitions (Barack Hussein Obama, Jr) into ONE word, it means Lucifer (Jr).

When he fails - and he will - then will see what the “world opinion” is of him.

Of course, the socialist left media of the US won’t report it that way - but trying to appease the Muslim world will only end up in disappointment!

One one - not even separate tribes can make lasting deals over there with each other - it’s not in their nature to hold packs - because situations change and so do the deals!!!

Agree. Krauthammer could tolerate Obama, but when Obama revealed his soul to the Muslim world in Cairo, Krauthammer has now directed his ire at Obama because he believes Israel’s survival is at stake. That said, McCain was a terrible candidate.

"Obama's standing above the country, above -- above the world. He's sort of God,"

I've heard people talk like this, or read similar comments, but this is the most frightening appearance of such a character in my lifetime.

"How are thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"
-Isaiah (ch. XIV, v. 12)

"I call'd the devil, and he came, And with wonder his form did I closely scan; He is not ugly, and is not lame, But really a handsome and charming man. A man in the prime of life is the devil, Obliging, a man of the world, and civil; A diplomatist too, well skill'd in debate, He talks quite glibly of church and state."
-Heinrich Heine

"His form had yet not lost All his original brightness, not appear'd Less than arch-angel ruined, and th' excess Of glory obscured ... Black it stood as night, Fierce as ten furies, terrible as hell, And shook a dreadful dart; what seem'd his head The likeness of a kingly crown had on. Satan was now at hand ... It is better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven."
- Milton

Somehow, I think obama agrees with the main character in Paradise Lost and would rather rule in the United States he plans to create than serve in the free country we used to have.

Charles Krauthammer:

... For all of his philosophy, the philosopher-king protests too much. Obama undoubtedly thinks he is demonstrating historical magnanimity with all these moral equivalencies and self-flagellating apologetics. On the contrary. He's showing cheap condescension, an unseemly hunger for applause and a willingness to distort history for political effect.

Distorting history is not truth-telling but the telling of soft lies. Creating false equivalencies is not moral leadership but moral abdication. And hovering above it all, above country and history, is a sign not of transcendence but of a disturbing ambivalence toward one's own country.

Nailed It!
Moral Clarity BUMP !

This ping list is not author-specific for articles I'd like to share. Some for the perfect moral clarity, some for provocative thoughts; or simply interesting articles I'd hate to miss myself. (I don't have to agree with the author all 100% to feel the need to share an article.)

I will try not to abuse the ping list and not to annoy you too much, but on some days there is more of the good stuff that is worthy of attention.

You are welcome to browse the list of truly exceptional articles I pinged to lately. Updated on June 3, 2009.  on  my page.
You are welcome in or out, just freepmail me (and note which PING list you are talking about).

Besides this one, I keep 2 separate PING lists for my favorite authors Victor Davis Hanson and Orson Scott Card.

Obama's use of moral equivalence arguments are plain juvenile when you actually break them down. From the article:

............."Obama offered Muslims a careful admonition about women's rights, noting how denying women education impoverishes a country -- balanced, of course, with "meanwhile, the struggle for women's equality continues in many aspects of American life."

Well, yes. On the one hand, there certainly is some American university where the women's softball team has received insufficient Title IX funds -- while, on the other hand, Saudi women showing ankle are beaten in the street, Afghan school girls have acid thrown in their faces, and Iranian women are publicly stoned to death for adultery. "..............

Indeed. It also shows a disturbing ambivalence toward reality. I think Obama is a lot crazier than anybody has realized yet.

On the Conversion of Malaysia

There are certain aspects of the current danger that are not obvious at this point. A little history may be useful.

When overseas, I heard the story of the conversion of the Malaysian region to Muhammedanism. Some visitors to the Kingdom had an audience with the ruler. These visitors bald-facedly lied to power by stating that all the nations to the West, from where they came, had converted to Islam. While this falsehood might have surprised some Buddists and Hindus, the King ended up bringing his people over to the worship of Muhammed.

In two ways, Obama is paving the way for our conversion and the supremacy of Islam, In the first way, he has simply cut out the middleman and become King himself. Not that the USA, as of 2008 didn't have some remnants of the Founders separation of powers, but this had mostly disappeared through penumbras and emanations discovered in the vicinity of the Constitution. The lawyering class had paved the way for a Princeps.

The above is further indicated by Obama's renaming of America from "Christian and Muslim, Jewish and atheist" in his Inauguration speech, to claiming on a trip to Turkey that the USA was not a Christian country, and finally to his discovery at the time of his Cairo speech that the USA was one of the largest Muslims nations on earth.

In the second aspect, it should be considered that the main blockage to Islamic supreme control is the power of the United States. To break the financial and military power of this country is clearly a top goal of anyone who seeks the rule of Islam over the world. It has been mentioned repeatedly that Obama's policies are strikingly opposite to what should be done by any rational actor leading the USA.

To expose the political example of a democratic republic as weak and easily undermined would be a lesson heeded by jihadists everywhere. Spanish democracy after the Atocha massacre was merely the first indication. These lessons should not be lost on the West either.

Obama's leadership and those who support him are a double threat to the existence of Western Civilization.

This world makes some pretty seedy gods.

We’ve got a clown for a president, and he’s going to be in there at least three and one half more years. Next year will be the first opportunity to forestall some of the immense damage he is doing to the country. If we can vote out some of his flunkies in congress, we might be able to send a message to The Grand Redistributor that we are not taking his screwball actions with equanimity.
