Bye-bye Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, roar Iran crowds
The Australian ^ | June 11, 2009 | Martin Fletcher

IRAN'S capital was convulsed with election mania for a second night yesterday as an eruption of pent-up rage against the repressive government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad built into a rebellion of a sort seldom seen in the 30 years of the Islamic Republic.

"Death to the government," chanted the several thousand Iranians packed into a football stadium in Tehran. "Death to dictators," roared the young men and women, draped in green shirts, ribbons, bandannas and headscarves to signal their support for presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

"Bye-bye, Ahmadi," they sang as they waved a sea of banners for the man who hopes to topple Mr Ahmadinejad in the presidential election tomorrow.

"Don't rig the election," they added for good measure.

Women have suffered particularly badly under Mr Ahmadinejad, and 20-somethings sporting sunglasses, make-up and dyed hair beneath their mandatory headscarves shouted themselves hoarse as speaker after speaker promised an end to repression, despair and the "empire of lies".

"I feel danger every second I'm on the street because of the morality police," an arts student called Nina said. As she was speaking, another young woman far back in the melee scribbled a note and passed it forward. "We need freedom. We want big change. We don't want liar government," it declared.

Men and women scaled the floodlight pylons for a better view. Hundreds more crammed on to a nearby overpass. Astonishingly there was not a policeman or basij (Islamic vigilante) in sight - further evidence of how the regime seems to have relaxed, or lost, its grip in the final days of an election far more competitive than anyone had expected.

The biggest roar of the afternoon was reserved for the main speaker, Zahra Rahnavard, Mr Mousavi's wife. "You're here because you don't want any more dictatorship," she declared. "You're here

Dear God, I hope they vote his butt out.

Me too.

However, please keep this in mind:

"You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this —- who will count the votes, and how."

We should airdrop a million iPods onto Iran, each one loaded with the message “With love from America”.

Unfortunately, the only candidates who were allowed to run were hardcore Islamists. The best we can hope for - from an election, anyway - is someone marginally better than Ahmadinejad.

That is my concern...it is who will count the votes. However, if there is this kind of a movement, and the Nut Job is declared the winner, it might be enough to spark another revolution.

We should hope, and pray, for that outcome.

In Pelavi days, Iran was an awesome place. Very Western and VERY MUCH a friend of the United States. The current dictator was one of the "students" who took our embassy after Carter screwed the Shah out of his throne (with help from Rez himself). The mass fear of the mullahs is incredible and the handful oppress the vast majority of very nice people.

If only we could turn back the clock... Maybe we could offer to jail Jimmah Cahtah if they boot the nutjob. Maybe they will have had enough and will want to return to the modern world and leave the moon-god behind for good...

Iran is chuck full of eye rolling drooling psuedo-dictator mahafs.

After the Nuremberg Trials Nazism was banned and old Nazis jailed. This must happen to the nutcases who govern Iran. Anyone involved must be banned and/or jailed to keep this from happening again. Thank you soooo much, Jimmy Carter. Your brilliant presidency has cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars. All because your buddies didn't get the oil port concession you promised them. You, sir (meaning Jimmy Carter), are an *sshole....

There is no opposition. Supreme Leader Khameni picks both candidates (in fact all the candidates). Revolutionary Guard overseers have shadow posts at the head of all the government agancies and report to Khameni. They can veto the actions of any government officials. The President is about as powerful as the President of the Soviet Union was, when the real power was the Chairman of the Communist Party. So if tweedledum beats tweedledumber, it just helps keep the nutjob from ever becoming a rival to Khameni.
