Black, Latino and Asian lawmakers warned Democratic leaders that any health care overhaul that ignores health gaps between whites and minorities will face stiff opposition.
The lawmakers said they would be hard-pressed to support a bill without a new program providing access to health care for all Americans.
"The public health option has to be there," Rep. Mike Honda, a California Democrat who chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, said at a news conference. "If we don't have a public option, there's no discussion."
Republicans are resisting a government health insurance program that would compete with private insurance companies, arguing that the companies would be put at a competitive disadvantage.
Members of the Asian caucus, along with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said they plan to introduce legislation this week that includes their wish list for broadening health care overhaul beyond various plans floated in the House and Senate. The three minority caucuses have a total of 91 members, most of them Democrats and enough to help shape the final legislation.
Citing federal research showing higher rates of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and infant mortality among minorities, they said they would seek more funds for community health centers that provide care in poor neighborhoods.
The lawmakers also called for expanding a National Institutes of Health center that focuses on minority health concerns, works to improve work force diversity in the medical industry and collects more data to better track disparities in health care. ....
Later, at a discussion of minority health issues at the White House, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the Obama administration is committed to addressing the "alarming disparity in the delivery of quality health care."
Doing so, Sebelius told officials, is critical to lowering health care costs.

Majority tax payers, want the minority lawmakers to F off!
Enact policies that spur private sector jobs. Get those people to work. End of problem.
WTF?
No, seriously....WTF!?!?!
“Enact policies that spur private sector jobs. Get those people to work. End of problem.”
That would help, but small businesses and independent contractors are a definite health insurance gap.
White people are getting too much health care!
Agreed. Us honkies have been living it up for way too long. Time for us to do our 'patriotic duty':
1) 20x more taxes than any non-Caucasian race.
2) Die.
give honda his demand,
“no discussion”.
quit public health care.
btw, asians make more per capita income than whites.
Affirmative Action Healthcare
Whites will be treated last in the emergency room.
And just what "gaps" do these racist Black, Latino and Asian "lawmakers" perceive there to be in their dark little minds?
Yes, the contractor situation is particularly a problem. Generally speaking, if a person is married, one of the two adults should focus on a position with an insurance gateway.
As for small businesses, some of them do provide insurance. Others don’t.
Still, if we can provide insurance to 90 plus percent of our populace, and the majority of the other ten percent are young adults and illegal immigrants, I’m not convinced we’re in quite the desperate situation we’ve been led to believe we are in.
I think the left inflates the figures to get what they want, socialized government controlled health care.
If you don’t fall into one of these groups, and you’re without health care, I recognize it as a problem. The question becomes one of trashing what we do have, so we can get a few more percent of our populace covered.
I’m still not convinced that’s what we should sign off on.
Why? Shouldn't EVERYONE'S health concerns be the focus of a National Institute of Health??
Why should white people's health concerns be ignored, even though it's working white people that pay for the FREE health care minorities overwhelmingly take advantage of?
What a bunch of racists.
Employers, regardless of size, shouldn't have to pay for anyone's health care at all.
Personal private health insurance should be available and affordable to all.
One of the biggest problems to the system as it exists now is ridiculous and frivolous lawsuits, and the huge settlements these ambulance chasers extract from the system is a cost passed down onto everyone.
Torte reform is one of the biggest 'cures' for what ails our health system, yet Democrat "law makers" are opposed to it.
I wonder why...
If they’d just kill the white man we could close the gap.
But then, who would pay for it all?
They'd have to go back to using witch doctors and voodoo, or Asian mythical remedies such as eating feces from hard to find bugs and other animals. The Asian medicine rule of thumb, the more rare the bug plant or animal, the more potent the medicinal value.
We can only afford 10,000 MRIs
3,000 have to go to Blacks and 3,000 to Hispanics and 3500 of the remaining have to go for Routine Mammograms
White males, sorry you got a lump there but.....
