"I dont know anything about cars," Whitacre, 67, said yesterday in an interview after his appointment. "A business is a business, and I think I can learn about cars. Im not that old, and I think the business principles are the same."

It’s important that the engineers and designers know about cars.
A CEO needs to know about BUSINESS, particularly finance.
The auto business is, above all, a business and needs to be run by BUSINESSMEN.
Wether this is the right guy or not, I don’t know.
Exactly right. Does anyone care if the CEO of SouthWest Airlines knows how to fly a plane???
Um, the CEO of Ford was hired from Boeing and knew nothing about cars.
Now, tell me. How did the car guys at GM and Chrysler do against the Boeing guy again?
GM was full of executives who knew a lot about cars but nothing about running a profitable business.
That’s okay, the President doesn’t know anything about anything.
This is the same Ed Whitacre who proposed that AT&T broadband charge content providers for the privilege of having AT&T broadband customers access their websites.
at the risk of repeating myself, again. And everybody laughed when Ford picked “an airplane guy” to lead them. Obviously, Ford took a risk that is paying off, now GM is playing copy cat and is hoping it will work for them.
He means he doesn’t know where the key goes, how to fuel a vehicle, etc.
No problem, Obama knows nothing about free market capitalism.
“A business is a business, and I think the business principles are the same.”
Agree 100%. I also believe crossing industry’s in senior mgmt is important to get a new set of eyes and ideas.
Well he’s perfect then, his Boss Obama, doesn’t know a damn thing about running a car company either.
Agree. In fact, someone with a completely new perspective could bring about vital change.
Exactly right. Whoever is running GM will have at least 800 bosses (POTUS, congressman, senators, czars, bureacrats, etc). Lots of luck.
Oh...I forgot the UAW too.
Coming soon to an approved GM dealer near you...the Shinolamobile.
“But of course I am an unqualified supporter of der Fuhrer, donated a fortune to his campaign and will do whatever I am told. Moreover, I am prepared to be thrown under the bus whenever it will suit our great leader or assist him politically.”
The same Ed Whitacre who moved from STL to San Antonio because he could. we’re not talking about an enterpreneurial genius here, just another corporate bureaucrat who survived his way to the top. How much did he contribute to the god Obama?
