Obama reportedly calls for tougher Europe stress tests

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The Obama administration wants Europe to conduct tougher stress tests of its banks after conducting similar tests on U.S. institutions, according to a published report on Tuesday.

Citing an unnamed French official, The Wall Street Journal reported that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will likely discuss the issue in Italy later this week when finance ministers from the Group of Eight meet.

The call comes just days after Germany's WestLB was reported to be on the verge of closing its doors until a new rescue package was put together.
