Molson retirees losing their free beer to cry in

Pensioners protest as their allotment of 864 brews a year will be cut to nothing

If you sang that well-worn campfire song about the beer bottles on the wall, you'd have to start at 864.

That's the annual complimentary beer allotment for retirees from the Molson brewery in St. John's, Nfld., the same amount of free suds they received while still working.

But, without consulting them, Molson has decided to shut the tap.

Come Jan. 1, the allotment will be a dozen bottles a month, down from six dozen a month (or 72 dozen a year), and in five years, it will be zero. For current workers, who also get 72 dozen bottles a year, the allotment will drop to 52 dozen. No five-year cut-off is planned.

Retirees held a protest outside the brewery last Friday. They've demanded a meeting with top company officials and will get one within the next two weeks.

In Vancouver and Montreal, where the allotment is less than in St. John's, the unions have launched grievances. Vancouver's case goes to arbitration June 16.

"There was no consultation, we just received a letter that this is a done deal, which is totally unfair," said Bill Bavis, who retired six years ago after 32 years at Molson's in St. John's. "I think with the economic downturn they're trying to take advantage of us, as a way to cut retirees' benefits and justify it."

And I thought the GM retirees were really taking a hit to save the company!

Actually, it's probably a bad move on the company's part, financially speaking. The more retirees they can turn into card carrying drunks, the less payout over their lifetimes will be required because they'll die sooner. Where are the actuarial tables when you need them?

< /sarc> sort of...

Since about 1980 I have purchased Canadian beer upon occasion in honor of the courage and loyalty they displayed when they sheltered Americans in Iran.

They are overall an admirable people who are unfortunately saddled with their fair share of anti-capitalists. We have them too.

It is always sad to think of a man being cut off from his beer.

Huh... So that’s why it’s called ‘Molson Golden’.

I’m a Western NY’r so I’ve had my share of Molson. Probably most of many other people’s share of it too.

Right now, my favorite brand is Sam Adams. May not be some artsy-farty micro-brew located in Armpit, WA... it’s just damn good beer.

My usual beers are Sam Adams Black Lager and Molson Canadian. I don’t buy the 3.2% crap they sell in the grocery stores here in Utah, except to boil hot dogs.

no down to a 12 pack a month compared to 3 cases. That’s a serious hit for a beer drinker.

You probably like Budweiser.

Both Molson's Gold and Molson's Canadian are good beers if you like lots of hops. I do, but mainly I like Beck's as it has even more hops.

Sweet Budweiser ? No thanks.

I immediately thought the same thing. Their pension plan it going to take a big hit when these retirees start living longer. You've got to hand it to whoever thought this up many years ago. What a way to shorten your pension payout...ruin the livers of your retired employees. < /sarc > sort of....LOL!
