Former first lady Laura Bush said while her husband, George W. Bush, does not think its appropriate for a former president to criticize his successor, she understands why former Vice President Dick Cheney has.
Thats his right as a citizen of the U.S., and I think he also feels obligated and so I understand why he wants to speak out, Bush said in an interview with ABCs Good Morning America. On the other hand George feels like as a former president that he owes President Obama his silence on issues and that theres no reason to second guess any decisions he makes.
The former first lady also approves of Obamas Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, saying she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee.
As a woman Im proud that there might be another woman on the court, Bush said. So well see what happens, but I wish her well.
Asked about the infighting within the Republican Party, Bush said while she and former President Bush talk about it a lot, its probably not that bad.
I think its just a very typical political cycle, she said of the GOPs shrinking status. Its like creative tension within a party for people to talk about what it is they how they want to be represented

It’s what happens when you bring a knife to a gun fight. Republicans have been trying to slash their way into office all across the land, and democrats have been blowing them away.
“Personally, I think it takes class for a former President to keep his mouth shut.”
My complaints with Bush come from his unwillingess or inability to talk when he wasn’t yet a “former” President. He allowed the left to completely frame every issue, for the entirety of his two terms, and didn’t have the guts or the competency to effectively counter any of it.
Anyone who thinks he hasn't approved of Dick Cheney's defense of the Bush administration record is lacking understanding of who these two men are.
Thanks for the verification. :)
“chill with the personal attacks bud.”
Sorry, they get people’s attention, so I’ll continue with them. Our side needs to wise up, toughen our approach, and develop the willingness to act, because we will be required to act.
True class.
Fascinating coming from one who displays his own "courage" by typing insults sitting at his keyboard.....
btw, back to some of those words you typed on the now deleted post..... the military - the ones who admitted had courage - adored President Bush as Commander in Chief, precisely because he DID display courage.
No offense, raptor, but I value the opinion of our troops more than yours as to exactly what courage is.
So can we deduce from this that you don't care if your attention-getting attacks bear any resemblance to the truth? As long as they "get people's attention" that is?
Not exactly what one mind call the moral high ground, is it? No wonder you have such disdain for President Bush....
There is no "fear" in carrying out the duties of the office instead of grappling in the mud with his brain-dead critics.
And there is no correlation between the downfall of the Republican party and the honor of President Bush. It is the lack of honor and courage in our elected Republicans to defend the War in Iraq and our war on Terror (which counter to some of the comments on this thread he, himself DID defend), that caused the failures of the party.
If they would decide to display some courage right now, the Republican party would recover quickly from their own self-induced sorry state.
"For the life of me, I cannot understand why people base decisions on feelings and not facts."
She's using mental reservation and being polite. Calling someone "interesting" is not necessarily a compliment. Saying that she is a "good nominee" does not mention for whom it is good. It's not the First Lady's job to criticize the next administration, nor to make judgments about policies. She's a classy lady, speaking elegantly, and she did this just right. I miss her.
That’s just ugly. You have a lot to learn about grace from your heroine.
Or "Bless your heart."
~~DITTOES!
The contrast in responsibility to duty, priorities, class, maturity, courage, patriotism, presidential actions and decency shines brighter every day between Pres. Bush and the #1 Appeaser and Blamer. It’s truly stunning .. and frightening. How I wish he was still at the White House.
God bless George and Laura Bush ... and Dick Cheney!
Don't. NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.
Amen...
Amen...
and AMEN!!!
. . .and didnt have the guts or the competency to effectively counter any of it.
Well, of course, this is a matter of opinion. Personally, I think it was just a personal preference on his part not to do the "PR" stuff.
I'm SO glad he doesn't pay attention to such nonsense!
GW's silences were maddenly inappropriate when he had the job. Now that he doesn't have the job, his silence is absolutely appropriate and absolutely the right thing to do.
GW is also showing a great deal of wisdom by keeping silent when Cheney goes on the attack. The damage GW has done, is done.
Verbum argentum, silentium aureum, which means perfect time to shut up. The far left has already noticed that their Obamessiah is, in almost every important area, continuing Bush policy, while loudly proclaiming the opposite. Let them do the talking. They are good at it and George never was.
The bush bashers coming out of the woodwork whenever they see the name Bush. LOL.
Jesus didn’t say anything when He faced His accusers either.
