Former first lady Laura Bush said while her husband, George W. Bush, does not think its appropriate for a former president to criticize his successor, she understands why former Vice President Dick Cheney has.
Thats his right as a citizen of the U.S., and I think he also feels obligated and so I understand why he wants to speak out, Bush said in an interview with ABCs Good Morning America. On the other hand George feels like as a former president that he owes President Obama his silence on issues and that theres no reason to second guess any decisions he makes.
The former first lady also approves of Obamas Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, saying she sounds like a very interesting and good nominee.
As a woman Im proud that there might be another woman on the court, Bush said. So well see what happens, but I wish her well.
Asked about the infighting within the Republican Party, Bush said while she and former President Bush talk about it a lot, its probably not that bad.
I think its just a very typical political cycle, she said of the GOPs shrinking status. Its like creative tension within a party for people to talk about what it is they how they want to be represented

Hey guess what? Heres something that may surprise you, but many of us also still pray for all that, including our new Pres., whether we like him or not! Why, because were Americans, and because its the right thing to do! Sheesh, you Bush-bashers never quit, do you?
My apologies, and congratulations. When can we expect the daily Pray for President Obama thread to appear as it did for Bush? I haven't seen it yet and cannot find it in search...
Grow up. You write as if ypu want to hurt fellow FReepers. OWF had/has a son fighting overseas and supported our President with her entire being, as did I because I LIKED going to bed every night knowing that President Bush was in charge of our security and that he had picked an amazing team to advise and support his efforts. Great men pick great men to assist them. Little men pick weak men to support them because narcissism will not allow for any debate.
"Grow up."
Yup such a nice way to start a post. Got any facts there?
"You write as if ypu want to hurt fellow FReepers."
I do not want to hurt fellow FReepers only purge the ones who insist on perpetuating the LIES about W presidency.FR is a conservative site not a W love fest.
So you want to play the comparison game. I have family and friends fighting overseas also. I have lost two family members in Iraq and one friend in Afghanistan, my son in law has permanent damage from action in Iraq. I suffer from wounds from 1974 in SE Asia. In your world who has the moral ground if serving is the measure? Foolish.
Once again you W supporters have ONLY made personal attacks, transference and belittlement as you defense. Typical of the people who went to bed feeling good about how they thought things were while 12 US citizens were MURDERED in the 24 hour period by illegal invaders.
Who needs to grow up?
And not even see that everyone who can read observes that they think they can say vile and offensive things to others and then, with their pretzel brains, turn everything around to make it the fault of their prey.
Truly, dsutah, I have seen the MO used here that is used by other angry malcontents. Needle a person to death in order to catch them in a trap and then use that trap to claim their own self-righteousness. It was dumb of me to keep arguing, but it's helped me remember a lot about the angry (albeit impotent) minority here and how they operate, so I suppose it was good.
I figure that what the boy keeps ranting about - that Viking Kitties tripe - is that he did the same to me then as he did here.....annoyed the crap out of me. And that particular time, I lost it and said something I shouldn't have said, a Mod stepped in and told me to "Knock it off," which I, of course, did, and now two years later, this poor boy has distorted it into the scenario he purported here on this thread.
It's just SO weird to me that anyone would obsess over some woman who's a complete stranger on the internet for TWO YEARS. How unhealthy is he to be so angry with me because I support a man he hates? Yikes!
Anyway, thanks for the defense. The mad one is his own worst enemy. He's being eaten alive by his own bile.......and there's no uglier, more pathetic way to live.
btw, since he made fun of my call for FR etiquette, I'm not going to ping him. Just for fun, mostly. :)
Hey there, Republic! Thanks! It has been an honor to support our honorable and courageous President with you.
btw, I think the discussion of "great men" will go over the mad one's head. Concepts of greatness are beyond the reach of people who live solely by emotion.
The whole attack on those of us who prayed faithfully for President Bush is just shameless. But I have to believe that the vast majority of freepers agree with that. Even if they didn't like President Bush mentally stable people don't attack those of us who prayed for him (and still are actually).
He is our brother in Christ, and he asked us to pray for him, for God's wisdom and guidance. It would be a sin of omission not to, IMO.
There are many, probably thousands of FReepers who LIKED President Bush and felt SECURE under his leadership.
Many of us TRUSTED this good man because we understood his drive to protect us as his number one objective and admired his ability to so just that.
Many of us understood the horrifically unfair rap the press slammed upon President Bush day after day and found great solace and joy in reading the daily running thread regarding President Bush's activities for that particular day, and commenting on those activities, be it signings, meetings, policy talks, press conferences, Laura, his dtrs, Barney, etc, etc, ETC!
Many of us LOVE President Bush. I do. UN-abashedly. And I have been a FReeper for a long, long time and have NEVER read a post like yours above...wherein you try to smash or crush those who LOVED President Bush because you believe that in a conservative forum opinions have to align with yours.
That is the stuff of liberals, NOT conservatives.
Was President Bush perfect, hell no. No one is.
Did most of us disagree with his lack of forcefulness where immigration was concerned?
Hell, YES!
Did most of us LOVE the way he respected and treated our military?
Hell, YES!
And did most of us LOVE the way he LOVED our Father in Heaven and did not shy away from saying so frequently?
YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE WE DID!!!
His most often quoted Biblical reference was Christ's words...".
Love thy neighbor, AS thyself"
If you are angry at FReeper ( or FReepers ) who loved President Bush, perhaps a Bush Bashing website would be more to your liking for that particular topic. You could vent there instead of trying to smash a wonderful FReeper like OWF.
I am so glad to see you on the boards once again I could just jump around the house-except-I don’t know if I can jump anymore :^)!
It’s really curious to me how it has apparently become “reasonable” here on FR to blame President Bush’s lack of “PR” for the election of Barack Obama,....
&&
You don’t think that many voters were swayed by the media’s constant and unanswered distortion of what Bush was doing?
He had the country with him right after September 11. And then his political enemies started chipping away at his popularity. It started in small pieces, but soon huge shards were on the ground.
I honestly believe that Bush was convinced that he needed to just concentrate on the WOT and doing the right thing. If he gave much thought to his critics, he believed that they would finally understand and get behind him. He was naive. A great PR team would have helped deflect the media’s onslaught.
Of course, the PR missteps are not totally to blame; McCain was a terrible candidate.
I still think that Bush is a good and decent man, but he is a lousy politician. Unfortunately, good and decent are not enough in our modern political arena
(Isn't it kind of weird that he hates me? What kind of person hates for that long and that violently over support for a President who is arguably one of the most honorable men to ever hold the office - I can't get over how weird and unseemly his hatred is).
*******************
Are you seriously suggesting a purge of those who support GWB? You might want to step away from your computer and take a deep breath.
It's one thing to say, "I wish President Bush had defended himself personally more." It's quite another to blame his humility and respect for the office he held for the election of Barack Obama.
One has to ignore McCain and his sloppy, liberal campaign, ignore the Democrat collapse of the economy, ignore the slobbering media, ignore the fact that Cheney didn't run, ignore the media pounding of Iraq (which President Bush defended nearly every day of his Presidency - we ALL heard him), ignore the white guilt and the mushy skulled American Idol youth who voted for him because he was "cool"...... in order to focus the blame on President Bush.
Even if his PR "inadequacy" was a factor, the idea that it was primarily to blame for Obama's victory is to me, just ludicrous.
Perhaps if I had been here for the last two years, I would have observed the pressures put on by others to convince Bush supporters that it was his fault that Obama won.....because it obviously worked.
But it still makes no sense to me.
I'm not here too much, but I have found it fun to occasionally engage in debate here - even with a few of the hostile haters.
The only experience I've had with the brain dead lately has been on You Tube with Obama freaks. It requires the same style of defense and argumentation with them as it does with these fellas... ;)
I forgot to add, “ignore the mushy, wimpy Republican ‘leadership.’
Exactly. I've always said that Dubya must have something going for him if he was able to marry a gem such as Laura.
One can only speculate as to what type, or class, of people would loathe her.
You've got to feel really sorry for them.
To: raptor29 Just curious. When exactly did YOU save the world from terrorists and protect the country against its enemies with your courage? (Another internet weenie attacking a real man). You guys make me laugh every time you attack President Bush. Especially when you don't even see that the article is not even about our brave President, but about his wife, the classy and elegant and non-political LAURA Bush. 32 posted on Monday, June 08, 2009 7:22:50 AM by ohioWfan (Proud Mom of a Bronze Star recipient!)
