Virginia’s permit requests, gun sales rise at record clip
The Virginian Pilot ^ | June 8 2009 | Louis Hansen

Erin King squeezed into a packed classroom at Bob's Gun Shop with a new pistol and a mission.

She sat through two hours of instruction and fired off several dozen rounds at the range with her Guardian .32-caliber. The 26-year-old from Suffolk bought her first gun a few weeks ago and plans to get a concealed-carry permit next month.

She'll slip her pistol into a hidden holster and protect herself commuting to her part-time job cleaning offices at night. "I'm responsible for myself," King said.

As the classroom shows, she's not alone.

Bottom line of this article is that concealed carry permit applications in Virginia are up almost 50% this year over last year, and last year set a record. I received my CCW permit less than a month ago.

tgusa,
After a wait of nearly 5 months I finally received my ccw from the state of Florida.
Took them 6 days to cash my check and 5 months to get the paper.
Is there a back up in Virginia?

Read the article, read the comments...wheres the beef? Seems to be an example of straight forward reporting; who, what, where, when, how.

If 20,000 people obeyed the walk/don’t walk signs or 30,000 people drove the speed limit in a single day would it make news?

Why is the V-P (and other papers) obsessed with citizens obeying the law and exercising their Constitutional right in this instance?

If I understand your question correctly, we do have provisions for a non-resident CCW permit. Here’s a link:

You can find out more there.

I know how to read and I recognize liberal BS when I see it.

“Aaron Karp, a consultant with Small Arms Survey, a think tank studying international policies and proliferation of firearms, agrees that political motivations and a strong gun lobby have driven the increases.”

“A driver’s license is harder to get,” Karp said.”

True maybe for non-felons.

188,000 CCW holders is very impressive. It is encouraging that it could be a leading indicator of a politician change to come.

There’s a reason we know that paper as the Virginia Pravda / Red Star.

“wheres the beef?”

My thought exactly.

I would expect there’s a *back up* in many states right now.

NOT what I meant,
Just that here there is a backlog and the gubmint is saying it is due to so many applying.
Did it take a long time after you applied?
I’m curious if it is that way all over?

"I'm responsible for myself," King said.

Where in the world did she ever get an idea like that? ;)

My wife is getting her CCW also. She isn’t impressed with her new Makarov, though - I think I’ll be buying her a .40 cal full-frame pistol. One good thing about Bob’s Gun Shop (mentioned in the article) is that they usually will let you rent a very similar handgun to try out before you buy. The Mak was a gift from a relative. I personally carry a Taurus 92.

Bottom line: people want to be prepared.

Sorry. It took two weeks for my license to arrive.

Personally, the irritating parts were the "easier to get a CCL than a driver's license" comment and the Brady Bunch quote.

1. Easier to get a CCL than a driver's license. Bull. I didn't have to go downtown to police HQ to be fingerprinted, have a criminal background check performed, and have a judge approve the paperwork to obtain my driver's license.

2. Brady Bunch comment about crime going down. Well, jeeze, do you think that might be due to a) the increase in CCLs and b) the Brady Bill going bye-bye in the sunset?

More responsible citizens willing to defend themselves = less crime. Even the Brady Bunch should see that obvious connection.

Sad that it should have to come to this I think. Still, if the State cannot provide protection for its citizens, I suppose they have no choice but to do it themselves.

Another FReeper says it pretty well ....”I carry a gun because I can’t carry a cop.” A good friend who’s a local policeman is all over this - he’s all for it (that is, law-abiding citizens arming themselves).
