The British National Party has won its first seat in the European Parliament after gaining more than 120,000 votes in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Labour could be on course to dip below 20% of the vote in what Harriet Harman has called a "very dismal" night.
After the first three English regions to declare, Labour is third on 15.9% of the vote behind the Tories on 26.8% and UKIP [UK Independence Party] on 18.1%.
There are still nine regions to declare their results.
But if repeated across the UK it will pile pressure on Gordon Brown, who is facing calls to stand down as PM.
The Conservatives won easily in the East of England, although their share of the vote remained roughly the same as in 2004 - as did that of UKIP, which came second and the Lib Dems, who came third.

In early results, they have about 7.5% of the vote, and have managed to get themselves at least one seat in the European Parliament.
Looking at the gains by UKIP and BNP, and losses by Labour, it's looking like the British are unhappy with how things are going.
But are they really that racist?
It is said that Rush is racist, too.
Ah, blowback.
Coming soon to an America near you.
(soon enough to avoid disaster, I pray)
There was so much anger at the Labor party when I was there last month it was amazing. They were so angry over small potatoes coruption compared to the Dims here it was refreshing. No amount of corruption here will cause some Dims to vote for someone else or even to sit home.
So I am not surprised that the BNP and UKIP have done well. And of course since Labor is in power they have tried to rule the BNP outside the mainstream and have sought to brankrupt them.
Yes. Pretty much they are that racist, although they have toned down their rhetoric in recent years.
Regardless, this is the predictable result of the mainstream parties failing to address legitimate issues. As a result, more extremist parties step in to address them.
The mainstream parties need to step up to the plate now, and address these issues, so as to not go further down this road.
They make no bones about being a "white people's party".
From their own web site:
Visualize the reaction in the US if a "white's only" party not only got on the ballot, but got 7.5% of the nationwide vote and got a seat in Congress. Is the BNP Racist?
The enemies of British Nationalism continue to parrot the claim that the BNP is a “racist party.” This claim is most often repeated because the BNP unashamedly addresses itself to the issues and concerns of the indigenous British population, and because it seeks to ensure that British people remain the majority population in this country. Opponents point to the fact that the BNP has an all-white membership, and that we address issues concerning white people. If the BNP is racist for holding this position, then, we would suggest, all of the following organisations - some of them state funded - are also “racist” because they too address themselves exclusively to the issues and concerns of their respective communities:
1.Watford Asian Community care
2. Watford African Caribbean Association
3. National Black Police Association 4. Metropolitan Black Police Association
5. Black Londoners Forum
6. Black Information Link (BLINK)
7. Operation Black Vote
8. Federation of Black Housing Organisations (FBHO)
9. Black Training Enterprise Group
10. Southwark Black Heritage Organisation
11. The Action Group for Irish Youth
12. Asians In Media (AIM)
13. Barfi Culture (Asians)
14. Black Britain
15. Black Enterprise
16. Black net Community
17. The Black Presence In Britain
18. Black Search
19. Black UK Online
20. Board Of Deputies of British Jews
21. Chinatown Online
22. Clickwalla (Asian)
23. Dimsum (Chinese)
24. Doncaster Chinese
25. CEMVO
26. Every Generation (Black)
27. Jewish.Co.UK
28. Jewish Telegraph
29. MMLondon (Asian)
30. Red Hot Curry (Asian)
31. National Association of Nigerian Communities - UK (NANC)
32. Barnsley Black and Ethic Minority Initiative
Have you noticed how the media NEVER calls any of these organisations “racist” even though they are openly organised along ethnic lines and stand for the rights of their respective communities?
It seems as if every group has the right to have an organisation speaking up for its rights - EXCEPT the indigenous British people.
In reality, none of these organisations are “racist” — each and every community has the inalienable right to look after its own interests.
This includes the indigenous British folk, and the BNP is proud to be the party which stands up for the rights our folk and country, in exactly the same way that all of the above organisations stand up for their folk.
Yes, they really are.
Nevertheless - in real, non-BBC skewed news - seeing labor come in third and the Tories take the top spot shows the country is at least headed in the right direction.
Labor wants to ban the BNP. That will be considerably harder now. I wish they had 10 seats. They would establish a new express airline for Islamic deportations.
And Sonia Sotomayor is a member of "La Raza", or the Hispanic "race" party. There is a Black Caucus here and in Britain. Asian caucus (in UK that means Pakis). Only whites are barred from representation. F**k that. Go BNP!
They really are racists. And socialists, too.
I lived in both the Sheffield and Humberside areas of the UK (South and East Yorkshire). Huge Paki population there. Crime was rife...and that was a few years back. No telling what it’s like there, now. Mainly (Brit) working-class areas. You don’t mess with folks there. When they say enough.....they mean ENOUGH.
Any party that doesn’t tow the socialist line will be vilified, so don’t look to the characterizations in the monothlic British press to determine what’s in the hearts of the people who belong to the BNP. In any event, England has crossed the Rubicon on racial politics, so who is to say that it’s racist to have a party that addresses the particular needs of the Anglo-Saxon community? It’s certainly no more racist than any of the other race-based parties and organizations as the BNP points out. It’s simply that the Left in Britain, as here in America, wish to create this false definition of racism which holds that everyone but whites and Christians can say whatever they like, no matter how racist, organize based solely upon race or ethnicity, and advocate for policies that benefit their race or ethnic group to the expense of others, but claim not to be racist. ‘Racism’ is an increasingly meaningless charge from people who have long used it get what they want, and if we’re all to be reduced to tribes under the auspices of ‘racial diversity’ then don’t be surprised when the white tribe organized for it’s own benefit like everyone else.
BNP now list as having won TWO seats.
