As far as the WaPo is concerned, he became a spy in the Carter Administration and continued through Reagan, Bush(41), Clinton and Bush(43). This line stood out for me in the article:

In other words, the Myers had a idealized view of Cuba as being paradise but they never could bring themselves to actually living there. According to the article, the Myers never even bothered to learn Spanish.

Good journalism from the Post, and excellent comments in this thread.

I love how they seemed to blame their treason on the horrors of the Bush Administration, when in fact they became Communist spies under JIMMY CARTER, the most “progressive” Democrat president between Roosevelt and Obama.

The other thing I noticed was how fluidly these people moved between traditional liberal-left worlds (the Senate Democrat caucus, Natinal Geographic magazine) and service to a Stalinist-Communist government. Very reminiscent of the days of Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White.

There’s also an interesting psychological phenomenon in which people who know they have committed horrible crimes throw themselves into “progressive” causes as a form of absolution.
