Barack and Michelle Obama's fairytale love story of an adoring couple propelled on to the international stage has caught the imagination of millions.
Their regular Friday "date nights" make the television news, and there was a stir recently when they caught Air Force One for a night at the theatre in Manhattan.
This weekend, in the aftermath of the D-Day celebrations, they are in Paris with their young daughters - having turned down an invitation for dinner with President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla in favour of a more intimate family event.
But it was not always wedded bliss for the First Couple. A new book, Renegade, about Mr Obama's unlikely run for the presidency, recounts a tense period in 2000 when the Obamas' marriage was on the brink of collapse because of his restless political hunger and the family's shattered finances.
"There was little conversation and even less romance," wrote the Birmingham-born Mr Wolffe, who covered Obama's campaign for Newsweek magazine. "She was angry at his selfishness and careerism; he thought she was cold and ungrateful."
At the time, Mr Obama was stuck on the lowest step of the political ladder. As a mere state senator in Illinois, he had challenged a popular incumbent in a Democratic primary by running against Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther from Chicago. Mr Obama was trounced by a dismal 2-1 margin.
His wife was new to motherhood, at home with their first daughter Malia, just two years old at the time. "She hated the failed race for Congress in 2000, and their marriage was strained by the time their younger daughter, Sasha, was born. Politics seemed like a waste of time to Michelle," the book says.
Mr Obama's troubles were compounded when he discovered that he was not on the guest

Regardless of what we think of his politics, if he hasn’t already, he would be wise to watch Fireproof and read through and follow the steps in “The Love Dare.” Lord only knows it saved my wife and I’s marriage...
So his affair didn’t hurt the marriage? Hmmm....
But seriously, the couple IMHO ought to live like the rest of us are doing. Not spending money on costly meals & taking vacations while most of we the people can't. He needs to lead by example. IMO he isn't. I am not impressed by either 0 or his wife & highly doubt I will be. In fact I am very depressed over what I am seeing.
What’s wrong with that picture is that the buffoonish Alan Keyes was added to equation in 2004, guaranteeing Obama would win the Senate seat by a landslide without even bothering to campaign in Illinois. So instead, he whiled away the campaign season by running around the country serving as a very charismatic and effective speaker at fundraisers for *other* Democratic candidates. THAT is what shot him to political stardom so quickly. Remember that, next time people are trying to tell you how great it is that some wild-eyed religious/conservative fanatic is running on the Republican ticket for a national office. Sometimes unelectable candidates aren’t just unelectable, but also politically very, very damaging.
Sponsorship pays lots of bills and opens lots of doors.
Who was it ?
Yea we do it, but not once a week. Typically my husband will work 70-90 hour weeks for 6 weeks stint and we hardly see each other. Then his schedule will shift at work and he will have a few weekends in a row off. We always try to do something together, even if it’s just a night out at a nice restaurant.
When we can we try to go away for the weekend, it helps us to reconnect, spend some quality time together and relax. We only started doing this after a very rough spot in our marriage that almost led to divorce. While our dates were not the primary reason we put our marriage together, they did help.
Nothing wrong having a date with your spouse unless you sick taxpayers with the bill!!
Reality check: the average professional-degreed couple in their 40s can easily afford to hop a train from DC to NYC, buy tickets to a Broadway show, and spend one night in a hotel before hopping the train back to DC to work in the morning. Unless we want our Presidents to get assassinated on a regular basis, this is just not how things work for them. And unless we want to further weaken the already deplorably weak list of people wanting the job of POTUS, we'd better be willing to shell out for the standard AF1 transportation and Secret Service entourage that all Presidents in our lifetime have required when going anywhere. Being POTUS shouldn't mean not having a life, and if we insist that it must, then we'll have only ourselves to blame if we have a depressing choice of candidates again in 2012.
Aw, the hostile black racist and her psychopath-narcissist husband are having marriage trouble?
Gee, I could never have predicted that!
I understand all that. I also understand that black Americans have this guy and battleship hips on a pedestal as role models. Most black Americans don’t know sheiss from shinola about harmful vs. helpful policies, have no idea what zero and his artful dodgers are actually up to and don’t care. As long as the zeros are black and stay black, that’s all they really care about. To them, black is the only ‘policy’ they know or need.
What I’m saying is that since zero and hips are so idolized by these dumbasses, maybe, just maybe, some of them will start pulling their pants up and start getting married. They’re an easily influenced and easily impressed group, after all.
I guess she wasn’t snacking on lobster and caviar back then? Cuz I predict that would get me un-hostile pretty fast, the poor dear..
I don’t understand your post. What is it you see problems with and with what do you disagree?
Remember the RING? Michelle was sporting a huge $30,000 diamond and titanium ring right after the inaugeration. It was supposed to be payback fo her going along with the campaign for Pres. Now the date nights...to me they seem to be another payoff to Michelle.
All I’m saying is that it is better for black Americans to look up to a man who is married, fathered his kids within wedlock, doesn’t were his pants sliding down over his ass, doesn’t have a criminal record and doesn’t wander around pretending he’s a rap star. That’s my only point.
Now if you disagree with that and think it would be better that black Americans are idolizing an unmarried guy with multiple women running around, fathered a bunch of kids out of wedlock, wears his pants sliding down over his ass, has a criminal record and thinks he’s Snoop dog, then more power to you.
Kobe Bryant blinged his wife with a rock just about that size. Those atonements are not because hubby is working late.
yitbos
Kobe’s wife’s ring was $400k.
I say weaken the list then.
I do not want a President who only wants the job because of the benefits.
I pray to God these types take their names off of the list.
If serving American citizens, upholding the Constitution, and living in our White House isn't enough incentive to run for President, then by all means, go away.
Barry needs to learn that the job shouldn't be treated as a 9 to 5. He wanted to be Prez, he got it, now go to work.
If our enlisted service men and women can sacrifice time with their families and maybe their own lives, then the Commander in Chief better be willing to do the same.
How sad it is that America elected this piece of garbage.
And by the way....Alan Keyes is a great man.
A much better man than someone who spends taxpayer money on a date.
Aunt Ethyl, er.. Chewbacca, I mean Michelle, had Obongo's campaign "financial advisor", Vera Baker, run out of the entire country because she thought Vera and Obongo were bumping uglies.
