Job hunting in a recession is a tough assignment - with almost one in ten people out of work in the US, it takes more than a spruced-up CV, a tidy haircut or a smart new suit to stand out from the crowd these days.
But doctors in the US have found a new way to give the unemployed a leg-up with a "Botox bailout", offering thousands of dollars worth of free Botox injections, liposuctions and other cosmetic procedures to ensure they look their very best - and perhaps a little more youthful - at interviews.
"If people feel good about themselves, they look younger, they are more confident and they make a better impression to a prospective employer," said Dr Jason Shapiro, who practices cosmetic medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"This is our way of giving something back to people who have lost their jobs and are trying to get back on their feet in a difficult time."
More than 1,200 people responded to Dr Shapiro's offer, writing to say why they deserved the treatment. He selected 50 individuals who will each receive up to $3,000 (£1,875) of cosmetic procedures.
"It was hard not to cry at some of the stories, and I'm not an emotional man," Dr Shapiro said.
"One was from a teacher who lost her job after working at the same school for almost three decades and found herself at interviews being compared to girls 20 to 30 years her junior. Perhaps by having some minor cosmetic enhancements, it would give her back her confidence. It could be injections to erase wrinkles or add volume, liposuction under the chin to create a tighter jaw line or acupuncture to reduce stress."
The selected patients, who range in age from their 30s to late 50s, can also receive
