RNC chairman Michael Steele reiterated his opposition to same sex marriage this week, taking issue with former vice president Dick Cheney's support for it.
"The vice president brings very personal perspective to this issue," Steele said on CNN's American Morning program on Tuesday -- a reference to the fact that Cheney has a gay daughter.
"My personal view is that marriage is between a man and a woman," Steele said, adding that his stance is "very much in line with what the president [Barack Obama] has said."
Cheney and Steele agree in one regard, however: Both say the issue of gay marriage should ultimately be decided by states, and not by the federal government.
Cheney says the issue should be determined "on a state-by-state basis." Steele said Tuesday that states should be the "ultimate arbiters" of what constitutes a legal marriage.

Gay “marriage” = Sodom and Gomorrah
If Steele disagrees with Cheney, I’m glad his position is to Cheney’s right.
We are one screwed up party.
Steele is now exposed for being a political hack without morality.
His latest stint is an attempt to look like he is a conservative - this after proclaiming that “abortion is a choice” when the GOP’s own platform says otherwise. His big-tent ideas will drive the GOP to permanent minority status, so I sometimes wonder if he is not an agent of the Dems.
There is nothing in the suit - it is empty.
He embarrasses all in the GOP - that is why when I received a RNC solicitation for funds yesterday, I made sure to send him a reply about his lack of representation of conservatives, and asked him to kindly take my name off the mailing list.
Steele simply can't resist face time on the media, can he?
He's a sure bet to fall into every trap set for a juicy soundbite by the liberal media -- Republican vs. Republican is getting kind of tired.
How about refusing to rise to the bait when it comes to another Republican, and attacking the other side for a change?
From what I recall of the interviews, Cheney did not say that he “supports gay marriage.” Cheney said that he loves and supports his daughters, one of them gay. He described the relationship between his gay daughter and her partner to be long and successful- my words.
Cheney did say that such issues should be left to the states. Again, he did not say that he supports gay marriage.
At this point in his life, should Cheney have trashed his daughter in front of the world. Is that what a dad should do to a daughter he loves and one who loves him? Is even talking about the damn gay issue why he came out of retirement to stand up for his country?
Steele was a fool for taking a bite out of this apple. The guy simply has no talent and has the brain of a watermelon.
The RNC will not survive with that idiot Steele at the helm.
I heard Cheney’s interview with Greta and he did support the position that whoever wants to get married should be able to do so....but it should be up to the states to make this decision one way or the other.
And, no, Cheney should not have, during that interview, nor at any time in the past, trashed his daughter. Nor has he.
Setting the actual subject matter aside, does Steele *ever* agree with the public statements of another republican?
One other point: Cheney is consistent. This has always been his opinion.
“I heard Cheneys interview with Greta and he did support the position that whoever wants to get married should be able to do so...”
Then I missed it and will hunt the vid down to listen to it. However, under the totality of the circumstances and present state of our country and considering the reason Cheney came out to speak to the public, I hold that it’s a dumb issue for us to jump into.
Some conservatives are allowing the MSM to pull their strings and shape the argument away from the life and death issues of the day.
I remember Cheney’s position with gays, just not the marriage issue.
But again, it’s a very ignorant time for us to give anything to the libs to use to undermine Cheney, show that we are not united, or change the subject to gay issues.
BTW...I am about as antigay marriage as anyone... but I refuse to follow the lib media on anything about anyone.
Actually, I think the important issue is that both Cheney and Steele are supportive of federalism for this issue.
And that is the part we should stress.
My take: the MSM tried to nail Steele again and this time, he didn’t fall for the bait. (Can you imagine the MSM article had he *agreed* with Cheney? — and the subsequent ranting on this site?)
“Actually, I think the important issue is that both Cheney and Steele are supportive of federalism for this issue.”
While I agree with that, I will part with you on the rest.
Please have a great day.
“Please have a great day.”
As to you...
“At this point in his life, should Cheney have trashed his daughter in front of the world.”
No, but he should at least have the courage to speak the truth like Alan Keyes.
After saying homosexuality is “selfish hedonism,” Keyes was asked if that made Mary Cheney “a selfish hedonist.” “Of course she is,” Keyes replied. “That goes by definition.”
