A legislative budget committee voted unanimously Wednesday to eliminate state agencies altogether, taking dead aim at an administrative layer of gubernatorial bureaucracy that oversees most of the state's departments.
The 10-member panel -- six Democrats and four Republicans -- also voted to eliminate the Office of the Secretary of Education, which lawmakers said is unnecessary because the state already has an elected Superintendent of Public Instruction and a State Board of Education.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recommended last month that lawmakers consolidate more than a dozen boards and commissions to save $50 million. Schwarzenegger also began laying off 5,000 rank-and-file state workers.The Legislature's move Wednesday appeared to be a sharp retort directed at higher-paid administrative appointees who oversee the departments that provide direct state services.
"It sounds like what we're talking about here is changing the shape of government," said Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield, D-Woodland Hills. "Government should be a pyramid, but it seems to have become more of a rectangle structure. And a lot of times in this kind of budget we always end up cutting people at the bottom. And this is saying, no, we need to cut people at the top and get rid of some of the agencies and make it more of a pyramid structure."

This evening they announced that they were raiding the treasuries of the cities and counties for cash “loans”..passing the problem along. They only have about 10 days left to come up with a crediable solution or they will run out of cash and can’t borrow.
We can only hope.
Fine by me—he deserves whatever he gets. He witnessed socialism first-hand, came to freedom, became a self-made millionaire, ran and won on a platform of bold fiscal conservatism—and then promptly sold out to the unions. Screw him.
Maybe they’ll put a stop to Cal-Trans spending jillions of dollars putting sidewalks along rural highways, where no one ever walks, like they just did in my area.
They could just take 10% of the (snow/severe weather) days personal.
That’s when they broadcast that all ‘un-necessary’ personal are to stay home.

Sure hope those invested in California muni bonds/bond funds are prepared to unload them in a hurry. I personally got off the roller-coaster and sold ours last August.

This is like a dream. Government shrinking before our very eyes. As they always say, eventually they run out of other people’s money.
It’s a shame that Hussein will inevitably move in to sure up the failed state government of CA. What’s worse is how after it happens, every other broke/failed liberal state will get in line for a handout. At the same time it will be an end to any remaining state sovereignty.
Are you kidding? They just finished taking out almost 6 miles of perfectly good wooden post guard railing and replacing it with unnecessary new steel post guard railing in a canyon which should be underwater with the unfinished Auburn Reservoir!!!

A true business model?
See my post below. There are so many agencies with so many sucking the teat employees that could be outright eliminated. Let them go get a job at the local car-wash or cleaning dishes - I've done it...let them, also.
On the up side, they failed in their latest attempt to put even more taxes and debt on us.
Still, look at that list. The politicians always threaten cuts in police, fire-fighters, and teachers (which would be no loss since CA is almost last in education). I wonder if they eliminated many on that list how much it would help our budget.
I sincerely hope California goes bankrupted and sends a message to all the other States. I sold my CA tax-exempt muni-bonds last year.
