When thousands of New Yorkers came to Boston for the NCAA Lacrosse championship at Gillette Stadium, the Boston Globe-Democrat ran a front-page article on the economic benefits of all those tourism dollars. "I love New Yorkers, especially when they leave so much money behind," the head of Boston's tourism bureau said.
Then the boats of the Volvo Ocean Race came to town, "leaving $20 million in spending by spectators, sponsors and participants in its wake," according to the Boston Herald. "The boost came at an opportune time for the city’s hotels, restaurants, retailers and other businesses, compensating for a large drop in corporate travelers," the Herald reported.
And now, the world-renown Tall Ships are headed to Boston, where they are certain to draw much larger crowds and far more tourism dollars than both the Lacrosse and Volvo events combined, and what is Mayor Menino doing?
Shutting them down.

Any time the “revenue” is the thing lauded first for an occasion I immediately cross that one off my list. The idea that everything has to be looked at from the perspective of monetary gain is a major turn off.
It seems the mayor has drunk the koolaid Obama has offered.

The attitude that tourists should just stay at home and send their money, so as not to be such a bother, is even worse.
The Myrtle Beach mayor’s war on bikers, while raising taxes to finance his little war, is a good example of this attitude.

My question is: Can these rainbow colored pillars of society balance out the droves of illegals and various other swill feeding at the teet of government (producers vs. consumers)? I think not.
There must be some backstory to this. Why exactly is he not allowing tours of the boats? Are they owned by the wrong people, does he claim it costs too much in police and rescue to guard them (hard to justify that since they will need police to keep people away)?

There must have been a rumor that a Republican might be on one of them. We already have at least three here that I know of.
Personally I love getting my shoes stepped on, getting beer/liquid spilt on me, and having to wait in lines to get food or use the restroom.

Seems to be budgetary problems and his not wanting to provide services for the event. Here is a story that may shed some light on it http://wbztv.com/local/tall.ships.boston.2.973908.html . I saw the tall ships first in 1976, seen them a couple of times since then .... plan to see them in Charleston this time. I can’t imagine anyone not in favor of an “open house” for such magnificent vessels.
The lacrosse championships acutally took place at Gillete Stadium, about 35 miles southwest of Boston. Gillete is where the Patriots play, and is owned by Bob Kraft. For all Bostonians, Kraft is the local guy who originally tried to build a stadium in downtown Boston. He was totally rebuffed by the buffoonish mayor, Tom Menino and all the hacks in the State House, especially from Southie. They seemed to have a real problem with a very wealthy and Jewish owner moving into the territory. It got so bad the now disgraced, disbarred form speaker Tom Finneran made it a personal grudge match.
Kraft gets the last laugh, he’s got hotels, movie theaters, shopping centers, including Bass Pro Shops, making Patriot Place a year round destination. And the city of Boston? They are hemorrhaging jobs, soaking what little tourists they have left, and are about to elect the most incompetent and incomprehensible mayor in history.
Of course the idiotic voters of this state keep electing jerks like Mumbles Menino, Deval Patrick, Kennedy, Kerry, Franks, etc. They have only themselves to blame. There is a solid core of about 33% who have reasonable conservative views in line with American values, but the rest are either Moonbats or useful idiot moderates.
I see that Boston is the only US port after Charleston to host the event. Some posts on Michael’s column have indicated that New Hampshire would be proud to host the event, I believe Connecticut would be another good alternative. If an “open house” isn’t allowed one of these alternatives should be considered.

Can you imagine how nice it would have been to have the Pats and Sox playing in a modern stadium in Boston? But, as you wrote, the idiots screwed it up. And Bob Kraft has his kingdom down in Foxborough, which I’m sure doesn’t mind the extra tax dollars Patriot Place feeds them.
I’d add Newport, RI to the mix.
