WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, whose father was an auto executive during the industry's post-World War II heyday, today called GM's bankruptcy "a sad day" for the nation as well as "a son of Detroit" like himself.
Romney, who made millions as a venture capitalist and whose business acumen helped rescue the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, also offered an "I told you so" to the Bush and Obama administrations, blaming both for wasting "billions upon billions" of taxpayer dollars trying to save the nation's largest auto manufacturer.
Rather than spend vast sums to keep it afloat, Romney said, the White House under Bush should have followed his prescription from last year's GOP primaries and pointed GM to bankruptcy court, which would have saved money and put the corporation back on the road to recovery much sooner.

Don’t know much about NASCAR—what do you mean by that statement?
I know, I know.
I was saying that from the start. Mr. Universal Healthcare is really late to this party
That's an understatement
but I think he could have turned GM aorund, saved a lot more jobs and found a more market oriented solution.
Like he did with Masscare?
Capital fled the USA on the expectation O was going to get elected. The economy almost just stopped after he was elected. People just stopped spending.
Capital would have fled no matter who was elected president short of Ron Paul, because everyone else were a bunch of statists.
I think Thompson - Romney would have been a good team and Fred could have told Mitt to lose his RIno tendencies.
Fred would have told Mitt something along the lines of profanity.
The foolish UAW rank and file would have been much better off with Mitt as President.
Romney endorsed the Obama task force earlier this year.
Saving the Olympics pales in comparison to saving our nation.
I’ll buy “Made in Japan” before I’ll buy “Union Made.” F’em.
Monster? No. Statist, typical Rockefeller elitist Republican with no new ideas or no core values? Yes.
NASCAR fans are very loyal to their drivers, products and the manufacturers. They are big buyers of American cars. Ford, GM, Dodge and Toyota compete in NASCAR. Hopefully the fans will not support GM or Chrysler any longer.
To Romney:
Thank you Captain Obvious... (Sorry, I still don’t like the guy for a slew of reasons, but if there’s anything I will admit he’d be good at - it would be the economy. At least he understands capitalism).
I could see him doing a good job at the FED or something (provided it is still around and isn’t a Ministry of Economics before 2012).
Its not getting ANY attention, because Romney is a loser.
Conservatives don’t pay attention to Willard.
Follow the money...
Who did GM give their Bailout bucks too?
I know that I will never buy another GM or Chrysler product unless it’s a classic — back when they were REAL companies and not government owned “make-work” industries for Union Workers.
All the good designers and engineers at GM & Dodge should be recruited by FORD, if they aren’t snagged by other companies, IMHO.
It’s honestly painful to see GM turned into a Government-owned and managed department of the interior or commerce! [American Gov’t to “own” 60% and Canada to own 16%].
Because they wanted all that money?
I've searched and searched but I just can't seem to find it.
it is just a slush fund to pay off political allies.
I wonder how much acorn is going to get?
Are you a conservative? You sure do seem to pay a lot of attention to the man. Has there ever been a Romney thread that you don't try & hijack? I notice you had no retort to what Romney has to say about the subject of this thread. Really, this obsession of yours might be turning into a sickness.
We know you hate Romney. That's okay. Now find some happiness in your life. I can't even imagine letting that much negativity run ones’s life as you seemingly do. My prayers are w/ ya brotha.
Yes, he would of. Lots of posters on this board trash him and call him a RINO, but I believe he was the best GOP candidate for president in the last election. I could see all the economic problems this nation was facing and already having, and Romney was a great republican choice for these times. He would of had my vote.
Instead we have a communityorganizer/lawyer/marxist whose been handed everything on a silver platter via affirmative action and doesn’t know jack about even running a business or corporation. His solution to this economic mess is to increase the budget deficit from 1 trillion to 3 trillion, cap and trade, and more bailouts. God help us.
I don't think he's qualified to represent conservatism. Like Giuliani, Romney's a Rockefeller Republican, AKA. a liberal. Besides being a liberal, Romney's a two-faced, unprincipled jackass.
My Chevy Tahoe is the last GM product I will ever buy.
