During the campaign, Obama told a story about his "uncle," Charles Payne's, WW II experiences to burnish his all-American upbringing. But Obama made a gaffe when he said his great uncle liberated Auschwitz. Well, Russian troops liberated Auschwitz, so the story changed that Payne was part of the force that liberated Ohrdruf, a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp, in April 1945.
Well, this story wasn't a gaffe. It was a lie, on top of a lie, on top of a lie.
Records show that a Payne, C. T. served as a private with Company K, 355th Infantry Regiment, 89th Infantry Division, during World War II. The C.T. Payne listed on the roster of the 89th Infantry Division is NOT a relative of Obama.
Madelyn Dunham's brother was named Charles "W." Payne, not Charles "T." Payne. Genealogy records show that his grandmother Madelyn only had one brother, Charles W., and a sister Arlene. Charles W. was born to Rolla Charles Payne and Leona McCurry (nee) in 1924.
Not only that, It seems that "Uncle Charles" was in the Navy. Payne, Charles W., enlisted in the US Navy on November 10, 1942, at Board #4, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. His US Navy serial number was 6293977.
There was a Charles T. Payne in the family. He was Obama's great great grandfather. He joined the military just after Pearl Harbor amid the fear and confusion on a "60 and over" enlistment that was meant to be defense at home. However, he also joined the US Navy. Payne, Charles T., enlisted on December 13, 1942, also at Board #4, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. His US Navy serial number was 3427439.
Charles T. Payne was born in 1861. He would have been 81 years old, and totally unacceptable for active duty in the infantry -- he is not the C.T. Payne of the 89th.

Then why does he think that he was in the army and served in the 89th Infantry?
I seem to remember an interview with his “great-uncle” or something just a few months back. Very strange if this is true, because although the man admitted Obama got some things wrong, he basically agreed with the gist of the story... I wonder if the old guy in Chicago needed a few bucks and agreed to the charade, or if Barack just thinks he can get away with everything he thinks of.
Face it Obama, there are just some records you CAN’T cover-up, no matter how hard you may try...
Because he is lying to protect his stupid nephew? They looked up the record and found a Charles Payne served in the 89th and decided no one would look up the information and determine if it was real or not. They had to do something after the mistake about which camps were liberated by American troops and which by Russians. That's my theory because the records clearly show he enlisted in the Navy.
Bottom line is this: Bozo doesn't really have any idea what his relatives did or didn't do, he is merely trying to paint a patriotic picture of himself, falsely of course, to help him win elections and stay in power, period.
Did the Navy liberate any camps, or sub-camps?If they did they were in the Philippines.

Barack Obama’s great uncle was one of the soldiers who liberated a subcamp of Buchenwald. One week before the US president’s planned stopover in Germany, where he is expected to visit the concentration camp memorial, SPIEGEL spoke to Charles Payne, 84, about his experiences in WWII.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Payne, early in June your great-nephew, President Barack Obama, will visit the former concentration camp Buchenwald, which you helped liberate at the end of the war. Will he be travelling in your footsteps?
Charles Payne: I don’t buy that. I was quite surprised when the whole thing came up and Barack talked about my war experiences in Nazi Germany. We had never talked about that before. This is a trip that he chose, not because of me I’m sure, but for political reasons.
SPIEGEL: What do you think could be his motives for this trip?
Payne: First, I think he already had this trip in mind — with Cairo on the one end and Normandy at the other, and time for Germany in between. Second, perhaps his visit also has something to do with improving his standing with Angela Merkel. She gave him a hard time during his campaign and also afterwards.
SPIEGEL: At first Mr. Obama claimed that one of his family members was involved in the liberation Auschwitz. How did this misunderstanding come about?
Payne: He couldn’t have gotten it from me since we had never talked about this particular episode in the war. My sister and her husband were both great storytellers and sometimes made up the details to go along with it. They told him about my deployment with the 89th Infantry Division and apparently they mixed up a few details. Of course it came out immediately that he was wrong since there are enough people in America who know that Auschwitz is in the East and that the camp was liberated by the Red Army.
SPIEGEL: Afterwards, Obama called you. What did he want to know?
Payne: He wanted to know where this camp was that I had helped liberate. I told him that it was Ohrdruf and that it was a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. I described a little bit of what I had seen.
SPIEGEL: You were barely an adult as a soldier back then — how did you wind up at such a place?
Payne: Everybody who was able-bodied was drafted. I went down right at the time I graduated and told the lady that ran the Selective Service office. I said, “I’m ready to go,” and she said: “Don’t you worry about it, honey. You’re on the list.” Since I had been colorblind since birth, I was first turned down by the Air Force, then by the Navy and the Marines. Only the Army didn’t care and put me into the infantry.
SPIEGEL: You came from a small town in Kansas. Where did you receive your Army training?
Payne: The Army sent me to North Camp Hood, Texas, for basic training for 13 weeks. We learned to shoot, obey orders and to march.
SPIEGEL: What did you think about the Germans at the time?
I got the wrong impression from your vanity post, I thought that this was something that you put together yourself just now.
I didn’t know that this is an old story that has been bouncing around for over a year over at Democrat Underground , The History Channel forum and other places.
It seems that the story never went anywhere, there must be a reason for that, do you have any links to the explanations that have been offered?

I’m sure a more knowledgeable Texan will correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as know there isn’t a North Camp Hood here. There’s Fort Hood, but I’ve never heard it referred to as “Camp.”
Camp Hood didn’t become Fort Hood until it became a permanent installation around 1950 or so.
Those kind of details usually don’t mean much because things change in the military, for instance basic training will shift from one fort to another for different generations of soldiers.
