Defense Secretary Gates to Visit Alaska Senator Begich to accompany Secretary on tour of Fort Greely
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates will join Senator Mark Begich on a tour of Alaska's Fort Greely on Monday. Traveling back from Asia, Sec. Gates is stopping at military facilities in Alaska which will include Elmendorf Air Force Base and touring the missile defense site at Fort Greely.
"This is an excellent opportunity for Secretary Gates to get a first-hand look at our missile defense system," Sen. Begich said. "Especially now, with the escalating and unpredictable behavior of North Korea, it's vital the secretary is taking time to come to Alaska which says to me he appreciates and wants to know more about the program."
The Department of Defense in its latest budget proposal has outlined budget reductions in the overall U.S. missile defense system, which includes not moving forward with a planned expansion of the system at Fort Greely, near Delta Junction.
Sen. Begich has consistently urged Sec. Gates and other military officials to reconsider this decision as Alaska's missile defense system would play a critical role in defending the U.S. from an attack from North Korea or any other rogue nation.

Anyone on or off the Palin ping, write me.
Gates is not meeting with Sarah Palin. Apparently she will be in Juneau tomorrow. Why isn’t he flying down to Juneau to meet with Sarah after his meeting with Begich?
Gates is doing Obamas bidding. He sure as heck has direct orders not to meet or mention favorably Palin who repeatedly called Obama out on Missile Defense.
An example of Obama Logic.
What do you do when a terrorist nation tests long range missiles?
Cut missile defense program and give the money to some Acorn crooks. No wonder he is so popular. What a smart guy.
IMHO, Gov. Palin should keep speaking up regarding Missile Defense and American Energy. Who cares what pansey Gates says. This tool visits Alaska and only meets with the D-Rat senator Begich on the Obama anti-missile defense plan....let these smart guys reap the whirlwind.
You are exactly correct! Meeting with Gov Palin gives her more exposure and credibility, and 0bama doesn't want that. Gates is nothing more than 0bama's "butt boy" and has no honor or integrity.
Interesting to note that Gates issued a more forceful statement about N. Korea only AFTER Gov. Palin addressed the issue. I do agree that Gates was probably specifically ordered not to discuss anything with Palin. It would be nice if she would just show up where he is and just confront him on missile defense.
I just heard that NK has moved a missile capable to hitting Alaska to a launch site on its coast. I’m betting 0bama and crew won’t do or say anything about that. Palin should once again point out the danger posed by N. Korea, and call 0bama out on his failure to actually do anything other than just talk about sternly worded messages.
Wow, so maybe Alaska IS on the front line just like Palin said during her interview as candidate.
Noooo! The world is now all peaceful and lovely thanks to Obama! Palin is stooopid and actually said that she can see Africa from her House! Tina Fey told me so!
There ya go...keep calling the WH out on the issue!! The Gov. stands strong in doing so and exposes the WH for the zeros they are!!
These little delta-winged jets (F-106, F-102) would be sent on a one-way mission as they didn't carry enough fuel for a round-trip and had such small wings that gliding for any distance was out of the question.
Hard to imagine what these pilots must have been thinking during alerts. Not many hospitable places to land with a seat strapped to your back above the Arctic Circle.
The sacrifice these guys were willing to make to protect America ought not be wasted on budget cuts to an anti-missile defense system that provides security very similar to that which they were prepared to give their lives for. It meant that much back then, it should mean that much today.
Go Sarah.
