Senior Israeli officials were dismissive and defiant on Saturday night, following Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's visit to Washington, highlighted by a report in which PA officials said the leadership is waiting for US pressure to bring down the Netanyahu government.....

...It will take a couple of years" for this American pressure to force Netanyahu from office, the Washington Post quoted one of Abbas's officials as saying....

"With all due respect to the United States, our strategic ally, we are an independent democratic country, and our political leadership is chosen by internal democratic processes," coalition chairman and Likud MK Ze'ev Elkin said on Saturday night.

According to the report, Abbas and his leadership believe the government would likely fall if Netanyahu surrendered to American demands for a total freeze on construction in West Bank settlements

What's interesting about Abbas's hardline position," wrote the Washington Post's Jackson Diehl.... "is what it says about the message that Obama's first Middle East steps have sent to Palestinians and Arab governments." While the Bush administration placed the onus for change in the Middle East on the Palestinians, Diehl wrote, the Obama administration had shifted the focus to Israel.

Abbas will demand Rice to pressure Israel to halt colony construction
AP
Published: June 15, 2008, 00:06

Occupied Jerusalem: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will insist US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice exert pressure on Israel to stop construction of colonies during her visit this week, an aide to Abbas said on Monday.

Also yesterday, senior Hamas officials travelled to Cairo in the latest leg of intense Egyptian efforts to squeeze a ceasefire out of Israel and Hamas.

Rice was slated to arrive in Israel later on Saturday and hold separate talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the West Bank on Sunday. The visit is part of the intense US effort to prod the sides toward a final peace agreement by the end of the year.

But that deadline meant to coincide with the end of US President George W. Bush’s term has appeared increasingly unrealistic of late with little visible progress in the negotiations.

Yesterday, Palestinians said Abbas would raise the latest announcement with Rice in a meeting today.

“Especially the issue of the new [colonies] will be discussed,” Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said. “The United States should exert real pressure on Israel and not just make statements. That’s what we’ll ask for from Secretary Rice.”

I hope this gets LOTS of play, in Israel.

That will give Bibi all the support he needs, when he tells Obama where to stick it!

Yeah...they wanted REAL pressure exerted...but this was Rice, not Bush...

Would like to ask some Jewish Obama voters how they like who they voted for now!

As long as they think he would save their pensions and SS benefits, they would vote again as they did before … they don’t care about Israel, only their own welfare.
