President Obama's expressed hope today in his weekly address "that we can avoid the political posturing and ideological brinksmanship that has bogged down this (Supreme Court nomination) process, and Congress, in the past" runs against another historical first for the 44th president: his unique role in history as the first US President to have ever voted to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee.
So while there is little indication Republicans intend to filibuster President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the GOP will likely invoke the President's unique history whenever he calls their tactics into question.
In January 2006, then-Sen. Obama joined 24 colleagues in a futile effort led by Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to filibuster the Supreme Court nomination of now-Justice Samuel Alito.
On January 29, 2006, Mr. Obama told George Stephanopulos on "This Week" that he would "be supporting the filibuster because I think Judge Alito, in fact, is somebody who is contrary to core American values, not just liberal values, you know. When you look at his decisions in particular during times of war, we need a court that is independent and is going to provide some check on the executive branch, and he has not shown himself willing to do that repeatedly."

Seems like it.
Jake Tapper use to work for Salon and I always thought he was a tool of the left...I may have to change my view.
President Hypocrite
He does lean left, but that has not stopped him from giving due scrutiny to democrats. IN other words, he’s doing what reporters used to do.
how many dem senators are needed to fili?
What dem would dare?
Spectre?
or is he still licking the brown off his nose from last week?
Haven’t there been a couple good pieces by Orson Scot Card too... but then, what I’ve read IS classified under opinion and so is not reporting.
The jokes just write themselves... or they would, if this was a joke.
The MSM has become decidedly Anti-Conservative. Obama’s goal is to destroy Conservatism in America or severly isolate and diminish it.
How does he do it well he claims to stand on all sides of all issues and the media let him get away with it. Actions have consequences and it appears no one is even willing to discuss the “What If’s” when it comes to Obama policy and when all of his policies dramatically fail the media will run cover for him still.
Bears repeating!
Steele should inform every Republican member of Congress that if they desire continued support from the Party they will vote no on Sotomayor.
If a member whimpers he or she is afraid of losing Mexican-American votes, he should tell the member the voters they have will not vote for weak politicians, the rest were not theirs to lose.
Further, each and every Republican member interviewed by the MSM, or otherwise making public statements regarding the issue, should convey in their comments essentially:
I didnt vote for Ms. Sotomayor because of the evidence she is not a reasonably strong lawyer and the fact that her behavior as a judge and her defective legal decisions indicate she does not have the requisite qualifications to serve on the highest court in the nation.
“Can I be criticized for that? I dont think so for several very important reasons.
The leadership of the Democratic Party stated they blocked Miquel Estrada simply because they didnt want him to serve on the USSC.
As we look now, the record is clear Mr. Estrada was far more qualified than Ms. Sotomayor.
Finally, I have a duty to defend the Constitution.
I think Tappers trying to make a name for himself as a real journalist. He was even harder on President Bush.
“Actions have consequences and it appears no one is even willing to discuss the What Ifs when it comes to Obama policy and when all of his policies dramatically fail the media will run cover for him still.”
Your statement reminded me how history can repeat itself:
“There was no organized protest and little unorganized resistance to Hitler’s appointments and the beginning of the new regime. ...many apolitical Germans were relieved the...crisis...was over...and (had) hopeful expectations.”
(Robert Gellately, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler)
In both cases, totalitarian control-freaks. Each would not have been possible without a majority that was unable to comprehend the threat posed by its government.
and fawning world leaders like Neville Chamberlain glorified in their Ideas of Peace in our Time.
History does repeat how right you are.
I have one question for the Republicans in the Senate.
Are you Patriots or Cowards? It is time to choose.
“I have one question for the Republicans in the Senate.
Are you Patriots or Cowards? It is time to choose.”
Bingo!
Too many of them in an effort to go along and get along (aka remain on the payroll), have chosen the middle ground, or what we regard as RINO-land. They don’t realize that abandonning Republican principles takes them directly to the Coward position.
