Penguins out to clip Red Wings' dynasty in Stanley Cup Finals

It has been a quarter-century since the NHL had a rematch in the Stanley Cup Finals. And when the Edmonton Oilers beat the Islanders in 1984, it wasn't just the Cup that changed hands, it was the end of one dynasty and the start of another.

Tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins step into Joe Louis Arena to begin their quest for revenge and the third Cup in franchise history. To win it, they'll have to take down a Detroit Red Wings team that has won four Cups over the last 12 years and has shown no reason why it can't add a fifth.

"It's all part of a process," said Mark Messier, a member of the Oilers team that lost to the four-time champion Isles in '83 before taking five of the next seven Cups. "And I think the Penguins are doing that same thing right now."

Many believe the Penguins, with a year of seasoning since falling to the Wings in six games last spring, are ready to knock them off. Others see little connection between these Wings and the '84 Isles: A dynasty? Yes. In decline? Not so much.

Here's how we see it:

The NHL would love to have Sid the Kid get his name on the Cup. I was pulling for the Blackhawks, myself.

At least the Pens aren't wearing those pansy powder blue uniforms from earlier this year.

What were they thinking?

We shall see. I wouldn’t put the Penguins in the obituary column yet.

Teams are well-matched, and the Red Wings are banged-up. I’m looking forward to watching.

Go Wings. Make the idiots at VS, NBC, and Gary Buttman all cry in their beer at their boy Crosby losing!

BTW - Wings in 5. They’ll drop on of the first two with Gary Buttman’s scheduling snafu, but will recover and win it at home.

Recipe for Octopus Chili Stew:

http://freep.com/article/20090530/FEATURES02/905300309

I'm sure a double-handful of deep fried penguin in the pot would be appropriate. ;-)

From the recipe:

“Cook’s note: To boil the octopus, hold it firmly by the head. Using a sharp knife, cut through flesh below the eyes, severing head from tentacles; then cut above eyes, leaving body pouch. Turn body pouch inside out and discard viscera if any. Wash body and tentacles well under cold water. Remove skin if desired. To tenderize tentacles, beat with a mallet or hockey stick until they feel soft and have lost their springiness. Put in pot of boiling water to cover for 20 minutes. Drain well and let stand until cool enough to handle. Using a sharp knife or scissors, cut octopus into 1-inch pieces.”

Sounds delicious.

Or you can find the biggest octopus you can get your hands on.
Beg borrow or steel a ticket to the wings and when they score ya throw the big 8 legged monster on to the ice and listen to the people go nuts.
Or do the same thing in Pittsburg if the wings clinch in front of the Pens fans and throw it right then. And get your ass beat.
