Smaller Cars Earn Top Marks in Safety Tests
NY Times ^ | May 28, 2009 | James Kanter

A study of car safety released on Wednesday shows that four of the top-scoring automobiles in tests of five new models were small cars or so-called super-minis — including the Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20, Kia Soul and Peugeot 3008. . .

Seats installed in the Kia Soul, for example, “achieved a good result in the program’s whiplash testing, again revealing that it is not only larger or expensive cars that achieve impressive results in safety.” . . .

It said the Honda Jazz and Hyundai i20 racked up “impressive pedestrian scores”

As far as pedestrians are concerned, we may soon have little choice. Last month, I was trying to help my nephew find a bull bar for his 2008 Chevy Tahoe. An acquaintance who owns a GM dealership (not for much longer) in the south suburbs of Chicago informed me that ALL the manufacturers are trying to make vehicles “pedestrian-friendly.” Sounds like an oxymoron to me, especially if those vehicles are going 30 miles per hour or more.

The dealer thinks it has to do with the trial lawyers (I’m inclined to agree) and their potential to sue the car companies for not employing the latest technology in safety. Frankly, all this technology is dumbing society down. The trial lawyers are the bain of all business; look at what they did to many companies in regards to mesothelioma.

A one-car accident is a bit different than a head-on with a larger vehicle. Do they ever test that way?

You can’t blame NASCAR from trying to obfuscate what really happened. There is a lot of money on the sport and the sponsors believing racing is safe, even though -

Hey they do the best they can and still make it exciting.

Cars under about 3500 pounds are upping the risks of injury. Careful perusal of the IIHS tests will prove that. This means a car about the size and weight of the current model Honda Accord is a good metric when buying. But that also means all the safety equipment boxes need to be checked off.

A golf ball can hit a concrete wall at 120 mi/h and look pretty good. Imagine if you were riding inside it. Raw hamburger.

This irony reminds me of the tagline “Don’t believe anything from Washington until it’s denied”.

So does my '94 K3500 Dually.

Old joke (from a German). A tourist goes to Germany and winds up taking a taxi to his hotel. The taxi is a Mercedes with the company medalion sticking up from the front of the hood.

The tourist asks the driver what that medalion is. The cab-driver says it's a targeting sight for pedestrians.

Then, to play with the tourist, the cabbie heads straight for a pedestrian, swerving at the last minute, just missing his "target."

As he drives by the pedestrian, the cabbie hears a "thud" and a scream. He turns to the tourist and asks what happened. The tourist replied, "Well, you missed that pedestrian, so I got him with the door on the way by."

I guess that they are smarter than physical laws. F=ma. The more m you have, the more f you will have. Add in a bunch of a and you will have a hell of a mess.
Gravity: It’s not just a good idea, it’s the law.
Sorry, just a little physics humor for a Friday.

If you wrote F=MA on a t-shirt, how many college graduates would have any idea what it meant? They'd ask you what does the “=” stand for? Some would take it as vulgar and tell you to f your ma.

A century of government schooling is what allows the Left to get away with all their lies.

Sure! The testing is done by an independent safety company in “Europe”.

BS. They ain't independent and are probably a consortium committee for these companies and a marketing arm.

Well, there is an easy remedial way to explain mass and acceleration to the idiots. Slam them into a wall. Then explain why that hurts. If they don’t get it, repeat the process as many times as needed.
