Issued tickets, man tells police "your courts are nothing" (He's a "Moorish National")

Syracuse, NY -- A Clay resident operating a Jaguar automobile without using a seatbelt was arrested Wednesday and the car was towed after telling officers that he was a Moorish national and "your courts are nothing," police said.

Ramost I. Bey, 36, of 103 Eagles Point Circle, Clay, was driving south on South Salina Street about 1:30 p.m. when an officer heading north saw him without at seatbelt. By the time the officer turned around and began following the car, Bey pulled into a parking lot of an auto parts store in the 4000 block of South Salina Street.

Bey, who was entering the store, had left the Jaguar unlocked with the keys in the ignition, police said.

An officer tried to issue Bey traffic tickets but Bey refused to give the officer his license, police said. Bey requested that the officer contact a captain because he was a "Moorish national," police said.

Bey would not follow orders to stand still and more officers were called, police said. A search of Bey turned up a valid commercial drivers license, police said. He was issued tickets for operating a vehicle without a seat belt and leaving a motor vehicle unattended, both motor vehicle violations.

"I am a Moorish national. Your laws do not apply to me," police quoted Bey as saying, "and your courts are nothing."

Bey said he would not go to court for the tickets, police said. Because of the likelihood of Bey not appearing in court, police placed Bey under arrest and had the Jaguar towed from the scene.

Getting uppity with the cops is a grand strategy. It impresses them no end.

It impresses judges too. I recommend it to all my friends. Well, my acquaintances. The liberal ones.

He left the keys in the ignition. It sounds like a reasonable law, the idea being to prevent irresponible third parties from joy riding and possibly causing harm. The owner or operator of a motor vehicle has an affirmative responsibility to secure it.

You know something. It may be a wrong thing to do, but it sure as heck shouldnt be illegal.

It will take several days for the city to find his car.

They invaded primarily during the 8th century and were turned back from France by Charles Martel at the battle of Tours in 732. They were muslims. Ferdinand and Isabel of Spain ended their reign in Spain in 1492 by defeating the moorish army at Granada.

So, the reign in Spain ended mainly on the plain?

“... and leaving a motor vehicle unattended ...”

It sounds like a bullshit law. How about arresting you because you left your front door unlocked when you left home this morning? After all, you made it easy for a thief to get in to your house and steal things, perhaps even your cutlery from the kitchen which they could use to commit mayhem.

I tend to be pretty much a libertarian on most things. A motor vehicle operated on a public way isn’t one of them. The problem is the potential for harm to third parties. Tort law is inadequate in addressing this issue, since the potential harm from motor vehicle accident is much, much greater than the potential recovery from a lot of owners and operators.

By your logic we might as well not have speed limits and drunk driving laws.

Excuse me? It's against the law to leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition? And he was going to get a ticket for no seat belt?

Sorry, I'm with the Moor on this.

Both are ticketable offenses in New York.

The issue is that, rather than take the tickets and fight them in court, the Moor got porky.

“I tend to be pretty much a libertarian on most things. A motor vehicle operated on a public way isn’t one of them.”

A motor vehicle “left unattended” is not being operated on a public way.

It is foolish to leave your car with the keys in it. However, it shouldn’t be illegal. It is already illegal for someone to use it without authorization, regardless of the availability of keys.

It is a bullshit law and no, the logic can not be extended to to say we might as well not have speed limit or drunk driving laws.

I bet you are one of those sheep who believe that bit about operating a motorized vehicle on a “public way” (your words) is a “privilege” and not a right.
