A group of University of Chicago students think it's time the campus focused more on its men.
A third-year student from Lake Bluff has formed Men in Power, a student organization that promises to help men get ahead professionally. But the group's emergence has been controversial, with some critics charging that its premise is misogynistic.
Others say it's about time men are championed, noting that recent job losses hit men harder and that women earn far more bachelor's and master's degrees than do men.
"It's an enormous disparity now," said Warren Farrell, author of "The Myth of Male Power" and former board member of the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women. He noted, among other things, an imbalance in government and private initiatives that advance the interests of women and girls.

"It's like saying 'is it OK for the Yankees to keep recruiting new players because the Chicago Cubs have not won as often?' "
Steve Saltarelli, the president of Men in Power, wrote a satirical column in March in which he suggested forming such a group. "Anyone with an interest in both studying and learning from men in powerful positions, as well as issues involved with reverse sexism, may become a member of MiP," he wrote.
Shortly after the column ran, Saltarelli started getting e-mail messages from men eager to join.
"Mainly people are just excited about the idea that men can have a group as well," Saltarelli explained.

GOOD FOR THEM!!!!!
That's what I was told in school, anyway (SFSU).
College enrollment has been tilted 60% females, 40% males for quite a while now. There is a strong case to be made that academia is a hostile environment for males.
Where do we join?
The Men's Rights/Health/Power movement seems to be gaining steam. We fight the wars, write the laws, die earlier, and have increasingly become subjugated due to job availability and policies like Affirmative Action that make, specifically, white males unable to find work due to the need to fill a race quota.
This country isn't progressive; this country is REgressive in its policies. All of the supposed good things that came out of the 60's have birthed grotesque policies against the Anglo/Euro Christian male. It's a sad day to live in America.
The group needs to be on their game and anything said in a negative nature needs to be responded to with charges of “sexism” “bigots” “hate speech” etc, and complaints/charges need to be in filed for each instance.
Like interracial crime and achievement...the Leftist newsmedia continually perpetuates the myth and lies to support their Communist, hate-America agenda.
I’m sure the ACLU will come to their rescue...
Liberal women do welcome Men’s groups on campus. They just have to be Gay.
to post 11 - that man has a pronounced set of jowls.
Interesting to see Warren Farrell quoted. His book “Why Men Are the Way They Are” is terrific. I read it a long time ago and it changed the way I think about male/female issues.
One thing that stuck with me: a study at that time (the 80’s) found that in TV commercials, when there was a man and a woman, the woman was smart and the man was stupid 100% of the time. One hundred percent! And it’s still pretty much the same. Men are devalued in popular culture.
Farrell made a point of listing positive things about men for which they should get more credit: for example, doing almost all of the really dangerous jobs.
Who is that dude? He looks familiar, think I saw him running the backhoe on a job site.
I suppose it would be OK if they invited Bill Clinton to speak and advocated men in power raping women.
Everything is pretty even until high school and the boy’s grades start slipping.
The boys are given slack getting into colleges in order to keep the colleges mostly 50-50 boys - girls.
Probably the biggest affirmative action program in the US is geared towards white males getting accepted at colleges.
Only White males...Black males are praised, etc.
Believe it or not womans groups are still not satisfied with getting 60% of all degrees. Men still get the majority of engineering, physics, and chemistry degrees and that is unacceptable. They want to use Title IX to force a majority of tech degrees to go to woman as well.
Women are never satisfied and can never get enough, except of course my wife.
