Sotomayor Would Be First Justice With Type 1 Diabetes
Associated Press ^ | May 27, 2009 | Karen Kaplan

(AP) — BETHESDA, Md. -- If confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor would not only be the first Hispanic woman to sit on the court. She would also be its first member with Type 1 diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in New York says the disease shaves an average of seven to 10 years off a person's life, but experts said Wednesday that diabetics who manage their disease well can expect to live as long -- and work as hard -- as healthy Americans.

"There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that she should be less effective at all," said Dr. Peter Butler, chief of endocrinology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center. "I'm confident she'll see off most of the other members of the Supreme Court."

Type 1 diabetes affects an estimated 3 million Americans, who typically are diagnosed during childhood.

What they are trying to say is that all of the insurance companies who routinely deny life insurance to known diabetics because of the obviously shorter life expectancy are prejudiced toward this Hispanic Woman because she is just better than the rest of us diabetics. The fact that she has diabetes is a plus, as far as I am concerned. So am I, and admirably in control of it. But outstanding control is not as good as the blood sugar control of the average drunken reprobate who does not have diabetes.

Or Roger B. Taney.

But I thought we’d gotten away from that. In fact we fought a Civil War over it.

More recently the bias has been in the other direction, with Affirmative Action instead of race-blind equality.

Like most medical oriented blogs, they have been taken over by liberals. At one point they are mad that her diabetes should be of concern to her ability to serve, and the other point is that she will cure their disease through elevation of embryonic stem cell research as a priority for funding.

Interesting. Perhaps you should start a thread about the possibility of developing prenatal tests for a propensity for Type 1 diabetes, and how they feel about her support for aborting such individuals. Then, they wouldn't have to wish for a cure anymore.

I do too. Was diagnosed at 9yo nearly 40 years ago. I just don’t see why this should be a big deal?

“So what exactly is the AP trying to say?”

Maybe trying to get the sympathy vote of any undecided congresscritters. She can always fall back on the Americans with Disabilities thing if they won’t confirm her.

she’s the first wannabe with diabetes. she hasn’t been confirmed yet and I doubt she will. the msm is just having one of the puke worthy love fests over her.
she’s no genius and she’s a racist. it’s not going to happen, no matter what people are saying now.

LOL, dfwgator. Where did you find that picture of C. Farley as the motivational speaker character he played on SNL? (who of course, lived in a van down by the river...LOL). What was his name?

Oh yeah: thanks. I liked the table crashing the best. The cast used to say that he was sweating so profusely( I wonder why) that he got everyone around him wet during the skits!

“She’ll also be the first openly bigoted, racist “justice” to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.”

I’d be shocked if that was true. Maybe the first in the last 40 years or so.
