Just a day after President Obama announced he was nominating appellate court judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, the battle over her confirmation has begun with former House speaker Newt Gingrich branding her a racist and saying she should withdraw.
Gingrich today joined the chorus of conservatives such as Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, who called Sotomayor a "reverse racist."
The accusations are aimed at comments Sotomayor made during a 2001 lecture at the University of California-Berkeley. Referring to former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's saying that "a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases," Sotomayor said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

I think you will find that the most vocal anti-Gingrichians here used to be his greatest fans. I find it morally repugnant to criticize Bill Clinton and then turn a blind eye to Mr. Newt for what appears to be the same lifestyle. I don't extend credit for someone that appears only slightly more discrete.
I agree completely. “Reverse racist” sounds like an excuse, as if it’s not as bad as being a “real” racist. This woman is a racist, pure and simple, just like Spike Lee, jesse jackson, Al Sharpton, and “reverend” Wright.
I afraid that this will prove to be wrong. In King Obama's second term he will instruct the Senate to remove term limits for President. By then the Constitution will just be a useless piece of paper and after the Senate passes the bill he will sign. Nothing will stop this Communists.
This is why despite his RINO qualities, Newt is the man. What other Republican is willing to take the flack from the media and say what needs to be said?
It’s an obvious point, but how many, if any Republican Senators are going to say this?
Many of us struggle with this tension and attempt to maintain and promote our cultural and ethnic identities in a society that is often ambivalent about how to deal with differences.
Many people wind up in a rubber room or hang out with communists as well. It appears to be getting harder to tell the difference where each of the liberals belong. In the rooms with the loons or at the local Communist Party HQ.
I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society.
Hunny, the blindfold is on the statue for a reason, NOT to look cool.
Bizarre is not even going to come close to what she will be passing off as justice.
Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasnt lived that life."
Latina woman with the richness of her experience...
Golly, isnt she just special! Ain't noooobody ever had to come up through the ranks WITHOUT stacks of cash from birth. Just her little racist azz. Yep, she is the first, the one, the only. Let us all grovel in unison...
IF (when) it blows the liberal communists that call themselves democrats that participated in this racism will be so shocked at the consequences of their commie cavorting.
I suppose that her actually experiencing the clear thought that a white male would not, in most instances, be either stupid enough, intellectually retarded enough or morally corrupt enough to actually stand up in public, on the record and say something THAT ignorant, is totally beyond her ability to comprehend.
The current "trendy/cool" bigotry and racism against white males is only going to go so far and only last so long.
Let me be explicitly clear here. If the "white male" population decides that after fifty years of affirmative action, reverse discrimination, preferential treatment, lowest common denominator "education" and now clear and blatant bigotry being reported by the "MSM" as "cool and trendy" has not only been for absolutely nothing, it has had, as predicted, a quite negative effect and made the situation worse and now "white males" are just going to have to suck it up, there could be a backlash that will make the massive slaughter of trench warfare in WWI look like sandlot volleyball.
Please do not rely on me. All you worthless communist lurkers that lightheartedly call yourselves "liberals" or progressives" or even "democrats" get your little pinhead noggins into some history books and find out just exactly what does happen when "white males" get push even one inch too far.
It’s been said before, but this woman is the answer to my prayers.
Like most of you, I’ve been praying about Obama’s SCOTUS pick. I think we all knew he would never pick a conservative or moderate. So I wanted him to pick the least effective liberal he could.
He did. He picked a woman who is so abrasive and so far out, that she makes even Ginsburg normal. She will be a reliable liberal vote, just as Souter was, but she will never sway any of the more moderate justices to her side.
I personally look forward to reading her dissenting viewpoints. I’m sure they will be a hoot.
Is she dangerous? Sure. All liberals with power are. But I promise you, in 10 years you will be happy it was her, and not Kagan.
My country has gone slumming.
The only phrase more Orwellian than “Reverse-Racist” is “Majority-Minority.”
It implies that the default racist is a person of European descent, and therefore when a person like Sotomayor for example directs racism against a White person, it is not racism but rather it is Reverse-Racism, hence it is the reverse of normal racism. Focus on the word “reverse,” it’s implying that normal racism is White people being racist, and when anyone is racist against a White person it is the REVERSE of normal racism, aka reverse racism.
In reality there’s no such thing as “Reverse” racism. What is “Reversed” about it? The only thing reversed is a lot of people don’t have their heads screwed on straight.
