local media

Posted on 05/26/2009 10:03:42 AM PDT by CounterCounterCulture

The California Supreme Court rules to UPHOLD Proposition 8 (which put into the California state constitution that marriage is defined as being between a man and woman)

The court also ruled on the validation of the pseudo-marriages performed before passage of Prop 8.

“The beinning of our taking back the country”?

No, I’m afraid not. One brief, temporary pause in our cultural entropy.

Actually, it was overturned in substance while being “upheld” in surface appearance. See above quote from the decision.

Isn’t the ruling similar to Bush’s decision regarding stem cell?

As time goes on, more of that population will be second-generation and later (i.e. fully Americanized, and indistinguishable from others of their age cohort).

In any case, the decision turns out to be so narrow and technical (see above) as to be meaningless and leave the earlier court ruling in place on all issues but the specific legal label to be used.

I just got called a “homophobe” by a liberal at another forum because of my support for this decision.

When someone calls me a "homophobe," I say "Homophobe?! I'm not afraid of homosexuals. I just hate the sons o' bitches." That usually shuts them up. (I don't really hate them, but I do enjoy tweeking libtards.)

"Legalese-to-English Translation: Proposition 8 is strictly limited to the use of the word "marriage". The state is still obligated to provide access to the exact equivalent under some other label."

Thank you. I hope this is something we can all support. Monogamy is a good thing. Spousal rights are a good thing. Fidelity and and long-term supportive relationships are good things. And leaving people the hell alone to live their lives in peace is a very, very good thing.

I can agree that we need to keep pushing against the left and have the 18,000 gay marriages that were performed completely dissolved (i.e. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia, Zulu and partner, etc.).

The Republican Party needs to pull away from RINOS like Colin Powell. When we were in a heated battle against Obama, Powell went and endorsed Obama for President. He damaged and betrayed us- the Party that made him what he is today. Powell needs to be expelled from the GOP.

BTW, Powell was one of the leaders in promoting our invasion of Iraq.

No, most Presidents lose seats in Congress during their term in office. The country basically lives Conservative, we just need Conservative leaders to stand-up for what they believe. When they do, they win!

That sort of overreach would simply lead to the loss of the miniscule remnant Proposition 8 after this decision.

The decision stated that Proposition 8 had no effect other than that same-sex marriages would have to be called by some other name. The legal rights and privileges granted must be equivalent.

Pictures of homosexuals rioting in the streets would show the type of mental attitude they display when they don’t get their way.

It is almost like a drug addict who is denied their drug fix. Today, the California supreme court let stand a declaration by the people that their BEHAVIOR was not normal.

The images of homosexuals throwing a hissy fit just reinforces that.

Yep. Gays just can't use the word "marriage." In every other way, they are equal with other Californians. Its silly for them to fight over a terminological distinction.

Which is what domestic partnerships and civil unions are. The legal equivalent of heterosexual marriage. Proposition 8 never intended to repeal them.

In Seattle (bigger homo population than SFO). they’re now planning a protest rally for 5pm this afternoon in downtown Seattle. This should be interesting.

Both the black and latino vote was overwhelmingly in favor of Prop 8 and against the homo agenda (but they also voted for Obama).

The gay crowd only protested against the Mormon church because they didn't want to tangle with "minority" groups and get accused of racism. I'm guessing the majority of Mormons are white.

This should be interesting.

I hope the police have their tear gas tanks filled up. They might need it. No gay "protests" that I've had the misfortune to witness were peaceful by any means.

This is what the other side is doing.

Next they SHALL be attackign DOMA.

“No civil rights movement has EVER lost. Never. It is not a matter of if our community will win full equal rights, including marriage. It is only a matter of when. But as in all civil rights movements, we will have to fight like hell for it.”
-Robin Tyler, petitioner-case to overturn prop 8

Anti-Prop 8 Protests
In Over 100 Cities Tonight

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 — With the California Supreme Court’s decision minutes ago upholding that state’s anti-gay Proposition 8, pro-gay activists in at least 108 cities have vowed to react with angry protests tonight to denounce they see as the brazen taking away of their equal rights.

While the court’s decision preserved the 18,000 same-sex marriages already performed, the main point of contention, the anti-gay Prop 8, was upheld, and therefore gay activists will respond tonight with protests.

Day of Decision co-founder Robin Tyler and her wife, Diane Olson, were the first and only couple married on June 16, 2008 in Los Angeles County. They married during the months after the California Supreme Court embraced same-sex marriage rights and before Proposition 8 cut off that right. They were the first plaintiffs in the suit which brought about the original court decision and were co-plaintiffs in the suit just decided by the court today.

“Even though our marriage is preserved by today’s decision, we take no joy in the fact that marriage equality for almost everyone else has been removed from our state,” said Tyler. “The upholding of Proposition 8 by the court is a cowardly retreat from the pro-equality stance it took last year, and makes our state a laggard behind pro-equality states like Iowa and most New England states.”

Andy Thayer, Day of Decision’s other co-founder, is also co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network and recently received widespread news coverage for his arrest with 30 others while participating in a Gay Pride protest in Moscow, Russia.

After tonight’s protests Tyler and Thayer see the next step for gay equality to be repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) signed into law by President Clinton in 1996. DOMA prevents same-sex couples in even the marriage equality states from accessing federal benefits that their heterosexual peers take for granted.

Most critically, DOMA allows non-marriage equality states to directly flout the U.S. Constitution’s “full faith and credit clause” under which contracts made in one state cannot be invalidated in others. Currently states that have, say, higher ages for legal heterosexual marriage are required to observe “underage” marriages performed in other states, but DOMA allows states to flout this same requirement for gay people.

“Many civil rights struggles historically have started with a state-by-state strategy to begin with, but at a certain point they must break out of that localism and take things onto the national stage if they are to be successful,” said Tyler. “By taking on DOMA, the lynchpin of federal anti-gay policy, we will be doing that.”

“The Democrats control both houses of Congress and the Presidency,” said Thayer. “They gave us the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, and now it’s their responsibility to clean up their mess, and we will do all in our power to force them to do so.”

“If President Obama does not repeal DOMA and DontAsk, DontTell, both of which he promised our community while running for President, the only gay Divorce you will see, for those of us who supported him, is the gay community’s divorce from the Democratic Party,” adds Tyler.

A full listing of tonight’s actions in over 100 cities in the U.S. and Canada can be found at www.DayOfDecision.org.
