We did. We walked a couple of miles to a local cemetery for a Memorial Day service. Went out to eat for lunch and dinner but otherwise wanted to keep Memorial Day as a quiet day.

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower died at WRAMC on March 28, 1969...a little remembrance of Walter Reed - in 1964 I was completing my internship there and as administrative OD was called late one evening to the VIP ward which was, I think, on the fourth floor of that gorgeous main building shown in the photo. I was met at the entrance to the ward - large and imposing double doors - by the charge nurse who told me that General Eisenhower, who had been admitted to Reed at the time, would like to have some reading material before turning in and wanted a couple of "westerns" from the library. Not even the OD was allowed into that off-limits area, but I did glance past the nurse as she was talking and saw through the door of the room beyond the reception area the bottom of a hospital bed half covered by a white blanket, and sticking from under the blanket what I guessed was His left foot.
Anyhow I took off for the library as fast as I could, thinking successful completion of this mission would surely be noted in my record and give a big boost to my career. Locating the keys to the library, I found a full wall - probably eight by twenty feet - with shelves from floor to ceiling dedicated to nothing but western novels. This librarian was no fool. Thinking I would impress the General by getting him the latest reading available, I picked out the two books which looked the newest, locked up the library, and completed my assignment by racing back to the ward to deliver them to the nurse. Next morning I saw her in the cafeteria and asked if the General had enjoyed his reading; she replied, rather icily I thought, that he had already read both of the books I had brought and had gone to sleep rather than requesting anything else. Such is the story of how I saw a former president's left foot, convinced myself that I was well on the way to an outstanding military career, and instead was probably lucky to escape a court-martial for gross incompetence......
When I was there, the modern multi-story building in the backgound of the photo hadn't yet been built and we were still housed in those "rose-brick Georgian buildings", which were interconnected with tunnels and covered walkways. They were looking pretty shabby even in 1964.......
