Five years of research into one of mankind's darkest episodes has convinced a French Catholic priest that the death toll in the Holocaust is far higher than the generally accepted figure of 6 million.
Father Patrick Desbois has identified 800 of the estimated 2,000 gravesites of Jews who were rounded up and shot across the Ukraine.
Documenting these graves is certain to boost the current estimate of 1.7 million Jews murdered in the Ukraine, he says. He expects similar work elsewhere in eastern Europe will raise the death toll even further.
"Surely, at the end of it all, the numbers will be larger," Desbois told The Times of London. "But we are still inspecting sites in Belarus, and there is the vastness of Russia ahead of us."

Well this is going to piss of Iran.
Surely there was a lot of shoot, shovel, and shut up going on that resulted in no contemporary records. The Poles were so intimidated by the Nazis that they just sat there while the incinerators were going as blatantly as a backyard barbecue. One could point up how cowardly that was, but they did not wish to be next.
Go ahead, try to persuade the representatives of the Holocaust industrialists here.

I don’t see why the likes of Iran get so deep into Holocaust denial. If anything you’d think they’d be dancing in demonic joy over this historic catastrophe on the people that they singled out over a millennium ago to hate the most. The only fly in their ointment, is that it sparked the creation of the modern country of Israel....
Correct. 6 million was just the number of Jews. Even in Germany at Dachau they say there were more than 6 million gypsies, Christians, lame, mentally ill, etc., also slaughtered. And that number is probably low.

Losing about 3M of your countrymen to the German National Socialists will do that to you. Polish Catholics suffered huge losses at the hands of Hitler’s regime.
Even 1 is 1 too many.
Dirty deeds need to be exposed even belatedly.
The count could be seven million not six if you count all the Jews who died in the trains and trucks going to the death camps.
Tell me why i should care if the number is off by a couple million?
The number is off by at least 6 million and more like 10-12 million. Historical accuracy is one reason to care. Being sure the story is correct is another.
These counts have been nothing but tools of propaganda and political persuasion to get taxpayer funds to build museums in places like El Paso, therefore they are best to be discounted. The most reliable counts, which don’t distinguish religious affiliations, would be census counts in the countries involved, and, I must tell you, they are eyeopening.
The point is not so much the overall “count” as remembering local incidents, mini-pogroms which have thus escaped notice. One might as well say why care about the number of soldiers we remember on Memorial Day.
Accurate according to who? Should I really believe that 70 years later someone can provide a more accurate number than was provided way back then?
I don’t see how it’s possible to get an accurate number. Therefore, when I hear someone claim they have a better number, I am suspicious as to their motives. What do they think they have to gain by reporting a larger number?

Well, I don’t concern myself with those numbers either. But at least those numbers can be backed up with paper records. The records of the jews were destroyed.
And I say a revolting dog on that. Most historians understand the plight of the Jews in world history to be the most enduring example of being ethnically hated. Other racisms pale to near nothing in comparison. If some opportunists turn it into personal Shoah business, their venality does not lessen the example. Like the people bearing gruesome pictures of chopped preborn babies, the historians, as controversial as they are, hope to inspire humanity to proclaim “no more!”
It’s still possible to unearth dirty deeds that due to local political and cultural conditions were hushed up for decades. Now somebody’s grandson remembers some victim his grandfather told him about, but never shared the story outside the family. Correlate such details with corroborating data and we know more. It may or may not make a noticeable bulge in “the number.”
