This memorial is in memory of sacrifices made aboard the Naval carrier USS Forrestal - CVA-59 on July 29, 1967 in North Vietnam -- Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea. Thanks for remembering!
I remember seeing the headlines and the photographs as a youngster, but only read accounts ofand felt the terror ofthat carrier disaster in recent years.
Also, a toast to all you combat veterans who paid the higher price than us peacetime and REMF veterans. Thank you all for your service.
I can still see the black and white photos from Life magazine that had told the horrible story of Pearl Harbor-ship by ship, body by body, smoke cloud by smoke cloud. Amazing, the wanton destruction that took place.God keep all the brave ones and those they leave behind.
One day I was home on leave, and my mother told me he wanted to see me. So, I went over to his house.
He showed me a picture of him and his buddies in a deep, icy-looking trench at the Chosin Reservoir.
They all had great big smiles on their faces. Smiling for the Life Magazine photographer.
I wondered what the hell they had to smile about. They were suffering frostbite, and were near being overrun by the Red Chinese, who would NOT be nice to them if they had done so.
According to him (you've heard it before from the likes of these men), it was no big deal...they were just doing their job.
God, thank you for these men. Thank You every day.
“Just doing their job”...yes sir,i’ve heard that in nearly every interview iv’e seen on TV or heard on radio. It’s a common thread of selfless heroes and tireless patriots. It’s just how we make them here in America.
I'm just opening up this thread, but it's never too late to honor our veterans.
